Enviro.Work
The place to find and fill jobs that benefit the enviroment
Hey IH community! Earlier this year, with the help of this community I launched Enviro.Work, a jobs board for environmentally friendly career opportunities. I launched on Product Hunt and Hacker News to a decent response.
After the initial launch, I saw some traffic but just a few people paid to post their jobs. Now, several months later, I'm starting to see more consistent paid postings! This is really exciting to me despite the relatively small amount of revenue. Recently, Enviro.Work passed $100 in revenue ($120 and counting!)
I try my best to promote the site, but I'm still wondering where I should go from here with it. I'm trying to validate if this is a niche that is big enough to eventually support a real business.
Stay tuned!
Felt like it was time to start battle-testing Enviro.Work so I decided to post it on Hacker News under the Show HN tag.
I've done this before with Collective.Energy and it went relatively well (getting to the front page) so I thought I'd try the same approach.
I told some of my friends and family I'd be doing this and so to be supportive they created HN accounts.
Right away it started going well! My post rose up and briefly went to #1 on the front page. At one point I had 128 concurrent users.
Unfortunately, due to the fact that several new HN accounts had commented on the post, it got flagged for spam and quickly dropped to nothing. Lesson learned.
Will try again in a week or two...

Since I was working on Enviro.Work in my spare time, it took several months to build the MVP.
In the process, I improved my skills with Django, which was the technology used to build the web application.
It feels like there's a long way to go for the site and it's pretty bare-bones - but I think that's a sign that I need to get it out into the real world for testing.

I built https://collective.energy last year, a community for catalyzing positive climate initiatives.
One of the things that I saw kept coming up within that community was people using the site to try to recruit. Many others were using the community to find work opportunities with other like-minded people on initiatives that helped the environment.
It seemed like there was good demand on both sides, but I couldn't find a place for those individuals to connect online. I decided it needed to exist and got to work building an MVP.

Any time I’ve been job hunting, I’ve thought of how nice it would be to be able to integrate my work life with my desire to do something about climate change. Hopefully, this makes it easier for us all to just that.
