Bite-sized game reviews by the people you care about
After eight days, just one day over our initial goal of one week, we've reached 100 responses 🎉
We created this survey with two hypotheses in mind:
- Game recommendations are social, people care more about the thoughts of friends and content creators, and less about professional reviews
- People want a better overview of these personal reviews, instead of social media feeds, youtube recommendations, or twitch streams.
We're able to prove that people care less about game review sites, Just 34% named review sites as an influence in purchase behavior:

Together with the results of another question, regarding how people stay up to date with gaming releases (just 24% chose review sites), we could confirm that our first hypothesis is true.
We asked our participants if they knew the Steam Curator Program to figure out if they already had contact with the concept of short-form reviews. 50% answered YES.
Next up we wanted to know how people feel about this kind of platform and added some playful answers:

Our learning here is that people like the idea, but it's nothing life-changing. This also reflects in the question if people could imagine being active on this platform:

Only 5% could imagine being very active, while 63% would check in occasionally. This is an important outcome for us: It made us realize that most people just want to check out the thoughts of the people they care about occasionally, but not necessarily stay up to date.
Our final question about possible monetarization (aka. affiliate share) is a split between people saying it would be nice to have, others don't care about it and a smaller share would like to see it.
So, how are we continuing from here?
With the amazing feedback we've gotten so far, our biggest takeaway is that not many people are willing to invest time to keep their profiles up to date. It's understandable and something that we want to solve.
We'll do more research and talk to people, learn about ways to make the interaction better, and also interview some content creators/streamers to hear their side of the story! We want to create a platform that's fun and intuitive for everyone.
On the other hand, we also learned that the Steam Curator program is quite well known (50% of our participants heard of it), so our goal is to take this concept, refine it and release our prototype as soon as possible so that we can collect feedback and show people what it's all about!
Over a year after the initial idea was born I finally decided to go further with it.
In 2019 I was busy with freelance work (and to be honest a bit depressed after our previous project failed) but now due to the pandemic and taking on a fulltime job for a stable income, I realized that I needed another creative outlet.
After a short pitch to my long-time friend @lotz, he agreed to help with an initial survey to validate the idea and get some feedback from potential users

Whoa, 2018? Yep, the idea for a personal game review platform was born back in 2018 while working on a decentralized marketplace for video games.
We wanted to disrupt the game distribution status quo, get away from Steam, Apple's AppStore, and Google Play and enable a fair and social marketplace using blockchain technology.
Well, blockchain was in a bad spot in 2018 so our idea never came to be… but the topic of a more social experience when discovering new games has been in my head ever since.

Nowadays people care more about what games content creators and friends recommend – But it's hard to keep track of all the thoughts of the people you care about. We want to change that!
