May 24, 2023 FediDevs.com Week #8 Update

A handful of bugfixes this week all based on actual user feedback ๐Ÿป:

  • Add ability to preselect an instance (with a selected_instance GET parameter).
  • Fixed a few edge cases with how selecting an instance worked.
  • Added .NET as a filter.

I've also created a new logo and did some other QOL changes to the site, so a busy week!

May 18, 2023 FediDevs.com Week #7 Update

This week I've removed 2 of the new filters from yesterday Gaming, & Security. Gaming wasn't a good fit, and Security had too many non relevant results.

I've also made a lot of small changes and improvements to performance/caching, page titles, FAQ wording, and others.

I've also focused more on marketing and trying to get more visitors on the site to see if this project is even worth investing in more. I've written a blog post about developers on mastodon instances (https://fedidevs.com/developers-on-mastodon/) and I can use it to get more eyes on the site.

The goals that I've set for myself are on hold until I figure out if I can get some search engine traffic to the site (e.g. for people searching for developers on Mastodon).

May 11, 2023 FediDevs.com Week #6 Update

This week I've added 3 new filters (Open Source, Gaming, Security) and made it so that you can deselect all the filters (this makes it easier to do free form search across all the indexed accounts).

For next week I have to decide which of the 3 things I'm going to implement:

  • Show number of new posts/number of new followers since the previous week
  • Add badges to highlight Python Core developers, Django Fellows etc.
  • Highlight posts from the accounts indexed

May 3, 2023 FediDevs.com Week #5 Update

Finally back from vacation!

Not much updates on the site this week, I only added a new instance to index and improved the Python filtering a little bit.

I did write a Mastodon yesterday that managed to create a little bit of buzz and that's why the number of visitors this week are up a little bit. ๐ŸŽ‰

April 25, 2023 FediDevs.com Week #4 Update

Still officially on vacation this so another minor update. ๐Ÿ๏ธ

I pushed a single change that (hopefully) fixed a UX issue from last week's update ๐Ÿคž More info here: https://fosstodon.org/@anze3db/110259980653963736

The traffic to the site decreased a little bit from last week:

April 19, 2023 FediDevs.com Week #3 Update

A quick update, since I'm on vacation this (and next) week and I'm trying to be on the laptop as little as possible ๐Ÿ˜…

Before vacation I still managed to push 1 update:

  • You can now select your Mastodon instance and it will be used for account links, avoiding the follow dialog when following people who are not on the same instance as you.

The traffic to the site increased a little bit from last week:

  • 769 unique visitors this week, up from 580 from last week
  • 1 person signed up for the newsletter ๐Ÿ’Œ this week. The newsletter has a total of 9 subscribers now!

April 12, 2023 FediDevs.com Week #2 Update

This was a quieter week than the first one after launch. I also did less updates due to having very busy days at the day job ๐Ÿ˜…

I still managed to ship a few new features:

  • I've added 4 new filters (C#, Java, F#, Scala, Kotlin)
  • The table with mastodon accounts is now sortable
  • I've added a new column with the number of posts each dev has made

The traffic to the site has slowed down a bit from the launch week:

  • 580 unique visitors this week, down from 3.15k last week
  • 1 person signed up for the newsletter ๐Ÿ’Œ this week

April 4, 2023 FediDevs.com Week #1 Update

Last week I launched fedidevs.com! This is how it went:

  • The site received 3.15k unique visitors and 19.71k total requests
  • The Mastodon post[0] received 17 boosts ๐Ÿš€ and 35 stars โญ๏ธ
  • 4 people signed up for the newsletter ๐Ÿ’Œ
  • I deployed more than 22 updates to the site including adding a FAQ, Free form search, indexed 3 new instances and added 4 new filters.
  • I posted the site on r/mastodon and Show HN, but got rekt on both sites ๐Ÿ˜…

For this week I'm planning to implement a few more improvements based on the feedback that I received and we'll see how it goes! ๐Ÿคž

March 27, 2023 Launched FediDevs.com ๐Ÿš€

Yesterday I have launched FediDevs.com!

It's a web site that indexes developers from many different Mastodon instances. This makes it much easier to find like-minded developers to follow on Mastodon.

The response has been very positive so far. In response to it I have already added more filters (๐Ÿฆ€ Rust, ๐Ÿง Linux, ๐Ÿฆฅ Haskell, โ„๏ธ Nix) and fixed some minor layout problems.

Some quick statistics:

Would be good if there was an option to search.
I just wanted to check if I am on the list :)

I am also wondering how you collected the data.
I for one don't have all those details included in my profile.
Maybe at least vaguely reveal how you collected the data.

Also be aware that this might be a somewhat problematic from a GDPR perspective.
At the very least you should offer a "please remove me". As absurd as that might sound.

Agreed, I'll see if I can add it soon.

I've checked and you aren't indexed on any of the lists :( If you want to be listed you'll need to add one of the filter keywords (e.g. python, golang, rust, ...) to your Mastodon bio. I'll working on a sub page that will explain this a little better, I did get a lot of feedback that it's confusing to figure out if you are listed or not ๐Ÿ˜…

I am also wondering how you collected the data.

I'm using Mastodon's Directory API[0] to get all the local users on a particular instance and I index a small set of instances once a week.

I only list accounts that are marked as discoverable - which is the Suggest account to others checkbox in your Mastodon profile settings. If you have this disabled you won't show up. Hopefully, this way I won't get too many "please remove" me requests since people generally want to be discovered ๐Ÿ˜€

Good point about the please remove me link though. I'll add some info about it on the same page that will explain how to get listed!

        That's the important bit ๐Ÿ˜Š
Great you are planing to adding an explanation of this.

How often do you crawl the directory?
Should probably also be some info to find in the FAQ.

I don't think following discoverable fully covers the GDPR case - but I personally also think that should be enough. ๐Ÿ‘ But adding some info about "how to get removed" would probably be good.

I've just published the FAQ page: https://fedidevs.com/faq/

Thanks for all the feedback, I really appreciate it!

            That was quick! Awesome :)
