October 4, 2022 Stop hyping, get sniping

You might have read the stories; "we decided to sell without a product and couldn't keep up" or "we built an email list, but no one eventually paid for the product". Building in the open is another of those hypes that everyone talks about. Or having to build a userbase, you need to attract attention by sharing, tweeting, streaming and so much more; but there's never a guarantee it will help.

Hacking your own startup together isn't about choosing the path others succeeded on, because their failures likely had an influence on how exactly they continued.

One of the things I found helpful is finding people motivate you to finish the product. These can obviously be leads, but also just friends or fellow tech enthusiasts. This support helps keep your motivation in check and allows you to look at your project positively.

Because when you're passionate about your project, you're also far more capable of marketing it. In Dutch there's a saying

What the heart is full of, the mouth overflows.

And so that's something I live by. Not always easy but sharing what you're doing with the people willing to listen, helping them grow when you grow through their dedication and support for you, is what strengthens resolve, creates hope and builds a tight community around yourself and your product. A community you can later activate as a network to pitch and promote your product.

Good luck building Indies 😉

September 8, 2022 Best forum software ❤️‍🔥 according to Slant

People seem to love Flarum! We've been working on it for quite a while, but have leveled up recently in our efforts. Ever since our stable release adoption has become increasingy higher and this has translated into our rating on Slant!

I love the fact that Slant allows an easy way of providing feedback, this has also caused us to prioritize some of our larger tasks. Tasks that we could only execute on using donations, by paying some of our developers. An example for instance is the upcoming package manager - allowing easier extension installation and updates - and the installation files - auto-generated installations of Flarum for different php versions.

v1.5 is on the horizon, which will tackle a lot of larger tasks including many items from our security roadmap.

Follow this project for updates! And thanks for reading.

September 7, 2022 v1.5 is closing in..

I cannot wait. It's one of the biggest releases so far. And although we have been working on Flarum for a long time, it now includes features that many were looking for before stable; easier installation and easier extension installation.

A few days of QA and then, next week, I hope to celebrate 🥳

About

Flarum is open source software based on Laravel, with PHP and a SPA frontend. I've started contrubiting to it in it's earliest betas and have now adopted it as my own.
