Flash Transcribe
speech recognition, speech-to-text, video transcription, ios
I found out there are thousands of audio/video transcribe apps in the App Store, however they are either way too expensive or have a poor transcription engine behind. On the other hand, Apple itself started to provide its built-in speech-to-text API since iOS10. Therefore I started to think about building an audio/video transcription iOS App with Apple's own speech-to-text API.
It wasn't an easy task since Apple's Speech Framework has a lot of constraints (e.g. media length must be <=60s for each request) and their documentation is not detailed enough. So I had to implement a lot of custom logics and enhancements to make it work on various types of video files. After around half a year, I released this App, which is called Flash Transcribe, to the iOS App Store.
Below are the highlights of my App:
-
Supports transcriptions for longer audio and video files- Unlimited transcription hours after upgrade!
-
Supports subtitle translations for local files as well as Youtube videos!!
-
In-app video player with subtitles- Supports exporting transcribed/translated subtitles to SRT/TXT format

Hey Adam,
your App is really great, congrats! I fully share your point, there are really many apps out there, but the vast majority are either lacking accuracy or are way too expensive.
It's definitely worthwhile to leverage Apple's native API for speech-to-text, and you fixed the length issue, which is great too.
One question: did you try, or is there a way, to transcribe the audio in real-time, that is in streaming, via the Apple API? E.g.: the App captures the audio played by the smartphone and generated audio chunks that are passed in streaming continuously to the Apple APIs, which provide back the transcripts.
In the Desktop/PC it's possible by invoking APIs provided by Google, AWS, etc through their SDK (not sure whether iOS provides similar); but having this on a iOS (or Android) would be awesome..
Let me know your view, and happy to clarify more!
Best!
Joe
