August 19, 2026 Building FoodieFlow, a meal planner that actually knows what's in your cupboard

I built FoodieFlow for my partner originally. Nothing fancy, just something to plan the week's meals and stop us throwing out food we forgot we had. I'm a mechanical engineering student, not a career dev, so this started as a "can I even do this" project more than a business idea.

It kept growing though. I added a recipe library, then a shopping list that sorts by aisle and skips anything you've already got. Then AI meal suggestions that actually take your pantry into account instead of just spitting out generic recipes like every other app does.

That's the bit I think is different. Most meal planners don't care what's in your kitchen. They just hand you a recipe and a shopping list for everything in it, even the stuff sitting in your cupboard already. FoodieFlow tracks what you've got and works around it, so the suggestions get more useful the more you use it.

It's live on iOS and Android now, free tier is pretty generous, Pro unlocks the smarter stuff like mood based requests and nutrition tracking and other features too. Running it solo on a tiny budget, so if anyone's got thoughts on early growth or has been through the same thing, genuinely keen to hear it.

The pantry-awareness is a much clearer distinction than the broader “AI meal planner” positioning. Interesting that the product started from a real household problem rather than the AI angle.

Yeah, "AI meal planner" is such a crowded label at this point, everyone's bolted AI onto something. Starting from an actual annoying problem (throwing out food, buying stuff we already had) meant the pantry thing was never a bolt on feature. It's kind of the whole point now.

That distinction is interesting. I’d be curious to hear what you’ve learned from users since making the pantry problem the core of it.

What’s the best email to reach you on?

Yeah, happy to share! Always glad to chat about what's working (and what isn't) with early users. You can reach me at info@foodieflow(.)app. Look forward to connecting!

Thanks! I’ve just sent it over.

Looking forward to hearing your thoughts whenever you have a chance.

About

I built it for my partner originally, just a simple personal project to help plan meals and stop food from going to waste in the cupboard. It grew from there into something with real users.
