Reducing CO2 footprint together!
It's been a while since I posted anything about the Fosshost.

Not that I've been lazy, or I didn't care - it's just that too many things happened lately.

Like we all know, servers use a lot of power, thus contribute to the CO2 footprint. We decided to help reduce it by planting a tree for every approved application. 🌳 ❀️

Since we already have many tenants with our free services (x86 and AArch64 VPS, DNS and MaaS), we decided to jump-start the project by planting 50 trees with moretrees.eco and will continue to do so.

We launched a microsite, the Fosshost ECO.
It can be found here: https://eco.fossho.st.

If you know any open-source developer (or project) who needs help with any of our services, please give them a shout about us.

All of our services are free for eligible projects. 😊

P.S. If you are willing to join our volunteering team, please check out our Volunteering Opportunities here: https://docs.fosshost.org/en/home/volunteering-opportunities

Take care!

November 14, 2020 OSUOSL Partnership

OSUOSL have kindly donated a dedicated server to the Fosshost project which will become Node 11. This node will be hosted within the OSL campus in Corvallis, Oregon.

The OSUOSL lab, in partnership with the School of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science at Oregon State University, provides hosting for more than 160 projects, including those of worldwide leaders like the Apache Software Foundation, the Linux Foundation and Drupal. Together, the OSL’s hosted sites deliver nearly 430 terabytes of information to people around the world every month. The most active organization of its kind, the OSL offers world-class hosting services, professional software development and on-the-ground training for promising students interested in open source management and programming.

We will in turn return the support shown and support OSUOSL with a dedicated UK node. The donation and working together with OSUOSL, is a new partnership that will benefit the wider open source community particularly within Europe, and we are looking at how we can work more closely to work on similar objectives.

The donation by OSUOSL is extremely kind - Thank you, Lance Albertson.

November 7, 2020 CustodianDC to Fosshost - Eco-Friendly Colocation

Recently we announced our partnership with Ampere Computing and how their ARMv8 64-bit eMAG hardware will allow us to provide arm64-as-a-service to the open source community.

CustodianDC, a UK provider of colocation, connectivity, and cloud Services have very kindly provided 5U colocation in their Tier-3 facility offering world-class and connectivity services.

We believe that we will be the first UK provider of ARM64 hosting services. CustodianDC operates a PUE (PUE is the ratio of how much energy is used by the facility and its infrastructure against the IT load) of 1.25 compared with a data centre average of 2.0.

Thanks to Amy and Rowland at CustodianDC for supporting fosshost and the wider open source community! You guys rock and have an awesome YouTube channel!

October 17, 2020 Fosshost CDN Project

Nearly a month ago we posted a news article launching the Fosshost CDN project an AnyCast authoritative DNS, which will have a GeoIP service for load balancing between nodes in multiple regions globally. To enhance the AnyCast service we are working hard on a fully AnyCast caching proxy in three core locations for HTTPs traffic.

This work would not be possible without the commitment and support of our hosting sponsors and Nate Sales, our volunteer network engineer who runs AS34553 who shares a passion for the movement and adoption of free software.

The CDN project will host several services exclusively for the open source community.

We have listened to your views and it will be strictly non-commercial, run by real, technical people who know what they are talking about. We will continue to provide regular updates on the CDN project progress.

We now accept applications from new and existing projects who are interested in using the Fosshost CDN.

October 16, 2020 Ampere Computing ARM64 Partnership

Ampere Computing the ARM-based computer chip processor has agreed to support and work in partnership with Fosshost to provide ARM64 v8 hardware which will be provisioned for virtualization for projects to use for build and development purposes.

Thomas Markey (@eth01), Founder of Fosshost said "The donation of hardware and support from Ampere is testament to our community offering that has helped more than 70 open source projects since our launch in April of this year. We have received many requests for ARM compute time, and I am pleased that we will now be able to start offering this unique service to projects."

The infrastructure will initially be shipped to the UK where it will be situated in an CustodianDC facility whilst we work on a stable boilerplate image. We are expecting to be able to conclude this work by the end of Dec 2020 and are now accepting interest from new and existing projects who are interested in faster builds, improved testing, and testing deployments on mixed architecture.

About

Founded in April 2020, Fosshost started after it became apparent that there was a demand for sustainable and high quality hosting services. Even more, for free. We began with one server and very quickly expanded.
