Funding my student computer

Even students can be sponsored

September 3, 2026 How I’m testing a brand-sponsored MacBook setup as an alternate funding experiment (Build in Public)

Hey Indie Hackers,

I’m currently an alternate student juggling coursework, client projects, and my e-commerce side-hustle. Like many of you, I hit a familiar bottleneck recently: needing a high-performance machine (a new MacBook) to scale my output, without wanting to drain my cash flow or take on heavy debt.

Inspired by some creative hardware-sponsoring experiments I saw recently, I decided to run my own small growth/funding experiment instead of going the traditional route.

Instead of just paying out of pocket, I set up a simple landing page via BrandMyLaptop where companies or individuals can "sponsor" an inch of the gear or get their brand logo featured as a supporter of the setup.

What I'm testing with this approach:

Bypassing traditional financing: Can an independent creator or student leverage micro-sponsorships from their network and B2B brands for hardware?

Value exchange: Offering companies/tools visibility on a dedicated hub rather than treating it as a donation.

Build in Public: Documenting the conversion rate, outreach friction, and overall viability of this model.

The page is live here if you’re curious about how it looks:

I’d love to hear your thoughts. Have you ever tried non-traditional funding models for bootstrapping your tools? What would make you (as a brand) actually want to sponsor a student or creator's hardware setup?

Today, sponsors are everywhere, it’s time for them to come at school. Today, students may have trouble financing adequate equipment for their studies, and if they did advertising next to the famous apple?
