May 6, 2026 From Shenzhen to Brisbane: Why I spent 5 months building an "Offline-First" AI Subtitle Factory for Mac

Hi Indie Hackers! 👋

I'm Flora, a solo developer who recently made a big move from the tech-intense Shenzhen to sunny Brisbane 🇦🇺. For the past 5 months, I’ve been heads-down building GeekLink.

The "Why"

As a creator, I was tired of two things:

1. Cloud Fatigue: Uploading 10GB of 4K video just to get a 50KB text file is a massive bottleneck.

2. Subscription Taxes: I hated paying monthly fees for tools that could easily run on my own hardware.

The Solution: Native & Batch-First

I decided to build GeekLink natively. It leverages the M-chip Neural Engine to run Whisper locally.

What I did differently:

  • Production Line Logic: Instead of processing one by one, you can throw 200 videos at it, configure once, and walk away.

  • Hardcore ASR Tuning: I’ve spent weeks overriding Whisper parameters to fix the "[Music]" errors in noisy variety shows—a specific pain point for my early users.

  • 100% Privacy: Your data never leaves your machine.

The First Big Win 📈

Yesterday, I shared the Beta on Reddit, and to my surprise, it hit the #4 spot on r/macapps!

My biggest takeaway so far:

Transparency wins. I was honest about being in Beta and lacking certain UI polish, and the community responded with incredible feature requests (like JKL scrubbing and in-app note-taking).

We are Live on Product Hunt Today!

I’m officially launching on Product Hunt today to gather more feedback from this global community of makers.

If you're a fellow developer or a video creator, I’d love to hear your "brutal" thoughts on the batch-processing workflow.

Special for IH community: The Beta is free, and I’m offering a 20% early-bird discount for when we go Pro! (Code: INDIEHACKERS20)

About

Most of the products for subtitle editing are separated. Usually, you have to use a transcription tool to get the subtitles, use another tool to translate them, and then transfer to yet another tool to burn subtitles.
