"Generating Product Ideas" Book
Generate product ideas for a profitable indie business
Today I'm launching my new book 📘🎉
Nowadays every skill for building a product can be learnt online — coding, design, marketing — besides one: generating new product ideas.
After launching multiple successful products in the last several years I came up with 17 highly actionable techniques for coming up with product ideas.
I hope it will help more people to start a business and solve the most urgent problems the world is facing today, making it more sustainable, healthy, and equal 🙏
I wrote an article with insights into self-publishing of my previous book in order to:
- Reflect and remind myself of the learnings
- Generate leads potentially interested in my upcoming book.
The article covers some of these topics:
🖨 Book manufacturing on-demand
👩🏻💼 Hiring an editor
📕 Designing the cover
💸 Amazon fees
🤷♂️ Why non-fiction books are full of fluff
🏆 Becoming a Best-Seller
😿 Challenges of being outside of the US
🏴☠️ Piracy

I've launched the landing page for two reasons:
-
Polish my messaging, similar to the technique Amazon are using writing a press release before starting working on a product (more about the technique https://medium.com/bluesoft-labs/try-an-internal-press-release-before-starting-new-products-867703682934)
-
Create a more established way to collect leads instead of a simple MailChimp form.
My goal is to get to 1 email sign up per day.

I prepared a 1-hour presentation and presented it in a one-on-one session to three entrepreneurs.
I had two goals:
- Structurize my notes and thoughts to something presentable by preparing the presentation
(Result: super-helpful, squeezing the content into a presentation is a great way to get your thoughts together)
- Receive feedback and see if the indie hackers manage to come up with ideas.
(Result: great feedbacks, new ideas created on the spot. Although it's challenging to listen and think of ideas at the same time, so a presentation format is quite overwhelming for my type of content. A better format is a workshop so hackers can have time to think).

This technique worked well for my previous book and helped me to validate the demand for a product, so I decided to use the same strategy also for this book.
I publically shared the list of my product ideas on Medium. Such ideas are an example of the results of using the frameworks I'll describe in my book.
The article included a teaser with a link to MailChimp form to get notified when the book is available.
The result: Received great feedbacks and some traction from Twitter, but failed to build a sustainable organic stream of traffic.

In last couple of years, I managed make a living from being an indie hacker by launching both successful and unsuccessful products. I've launched physical, digital, community and content products.
During this journey, I've been writing down frameworks and mental models that helped me to come up with new product ideas.
At some point I realized that other indie hackers and entrepreneurs could benefit from these frameworks. Especially those who are looking for product ideas.

We’ve been told that “ideas are cheap, execution is everything.” While I agree with this, I believe there are enough resources teaching execution but not enough teaching how to come up with ideas.
