Genewly
Project and domain name generator
While randomly checking genewly.com myself, I realized that the two main functionalities of the app had stopped working π
There had been a mix up with the encryption certificate and the API wasn't reachable anymore. I didn't notice since the frontend of the app was loading fine, so I don't really know how long it had been like this.
I don't want this to happen again so I chose to add automatic tests to monitor the health of the app and be able to know pretty quickly in the future when something like this happens.
Setting up something myself seemed too tedious and a quick google search yielded Checkly. I've just sarted using it and I can already strongly recommend it. They have a free tier that makes sense for a small app like genewly and it's very easy to use with good tutorials (you'll need some previous coding experience though).
All this to say that now I have 3 checks running daily. They test the website availability and the 2 main functionalities that were impacted. Checkly seems to also check the certificate validity by default, which is nice π
I know it feels like a long time, but when you have a full-time job and kids, side-projects can take a very long time to get finished.
And it's not even finished actually. I went for the Minimal Lovable Product approach. I chose this over the standard MVP as I know genewly.com is a very specific product with not a lot of potential features.
Genewly is a (yet another) name generator meant for speeding up finding an available domain for a project. It tries to find a completely new (yet familiar) word for you and goes on to check available domains and double meanings.
It's a bit different than the others for:
- it's similar words feature
- the way it creates new words
- the double meaning check
I went for no tracking, no cookie. I wanted to both keep the cost to a minimum and the privacy to a maximum. I considered plausible and simple analytics (both on here I believe) but they didn't have a free tier. I have affiliate links on the domains generated so I will know if people click on them, this is the only KPI I will follow in the end and I think it's enough for this project. If you liked the genewly, consider using it for your next domain acquisition :)

Finding a name for a project can be really hard if you're aiming for available domain at the same time. I try to solve this.

It would be useful to add a filter where users could filter results to only those with available .com for example.
Hi John, this feature is now available. It will be improved in the future so that empty slots get filled. This is trickier as a lot of round-trips to namecheap are necessary for that. But I think what's in place now should already be helpful!
Very cool! I just tried it, and it works great - nice job!
Thanks a lot for your feedback! I will add that and let you know when it's live.
