September 14, 2022 Updates about GetServerStatus

Hi there,

In the past weeks I published in a some makers websites, such as ProductHunt, SideProjectors, AlternativeTo and HackerNews and although I was able to get some unpaid traffic, GetServerStatus has a couple more users but none of them activated our agent in its servers. I tried to reach a few users but got no replies.

One thing worth mention is the new users that signed up used the Google authentication.

In the mean time I've took the time to implement the Slack integration with our alarms API and write the integration documentation, as a lesson learned from the comments section in my first post here.

Right now I'm working on a Docker integration and it is probably going to be released in the end of this week, or maybe next... :D

Thanks

August 23, 2022 Launch on PH and more week updates

In the past week, since I launched my first post I fixed a few bugs, reported here by my fellow IHs :-).

I've also implemented a Google sign in button, in order to be more frictionless.

Also took the courage to create a ProductHunt (https://www.producthunt.com/posts/getserverstatus), feel free to comment there and spread the news.

For the following days I'm looking forward to implement a new functionality: integrate with Slack, and also setup a blog dedicated to inform our users.

August 18, 2022 How I built a SaaS for server monitoring tool

Since 2013, I've been using software monitoring tools, both open source and proprietary.

Then I decided to build one mainly to scratch my own itches and make an easy to deploy and affordable one.

But, I struggled a little bit on how to organize the tasks in order to build this MVP.

First, I separated it in two projects, one for building the web application: frontend, backend and integrations needed, and the other for building the server agent.

Since I targeted Linux host monitoring, I broke the tasks into collecting metrics, creating background service and packaging it for the main distros.

For the web application, I designed the API to receive the payloads and moved to the creation of the dashboards to consume the servers statistics. After that I designed the alarm and webhook features, very important to add dynamism to the aplication.

Once I had it broken down this backlog in individual tasks, I tried to implement in a one per day basis. Since it is a side project of mine, I skipped a few days due to my daily obligations and tried to keep a positive balance at the weekends.

It's been a nice walk, learned a lot about the underlying OS metrics, payment systems and frontend (my weakest spot ever). Moving forward, I would like to implement a Windows agent (I worked with WMI in the past), and also docker integrations.

It is available for trial right now and feedback from this valuable IH community will be very appreciated.

Hi, signed up and set up a test host :)
But https://www.getserverstatus.com/dashboard responds with 502 Bad Gateway after I login

I'm also not seeing a way to work with webhooks after I configured a host, where can I find it?

Another thing is how you planning on building trust? you are asking to install with high privileges your service. Currently I'll be very hesitated to install it on some production system

      Hello,

      I appreciate your feedback!

      1. I just fixed the 502 error response when accessing the dashboard.
      2. Created a page to educate users on how to setup an alarm webhook in the Documentation section, called 'Webhook setup'.
      3. Regarding building trust, I am considering to release the agent source code in order to address this concernment.

      Tks!

Good work. You are right!!. The functionality of 'alarm and webhook features' is really important for such a tool.

But any thoughts on how you are going to market your product? Dev's usually tend to not spend much time on marketing. So, just checking.

Thanks! you're right, we tend to believe too much in the motto "if you build they'll come"...
I'll try to spend a few bucks in Google Ads and also try to improve the SEO with blog posts along the way.
In a second moment, I'm also considering create a few promo codes and invest in strategies with other content creators in the internet.
      Any thoughts?
      TIA

Sorry to disappoint you. My advice would be to bet more on content for this kind of product.

You may have a very less conversions with Ads for something like this. The same is the care with working with content creators and distributing coupon codes.

It might hurt you but that would be a good direction to think. I kind of wrote a few strategies on launching at Zero To Founder

    Hi @IndieHacker32123,

Just a heads up, I get a 502 Bad Gateway when trying to access the terms: https://www.getserverstatus.com/terms
