At this point, I don't really feel like I'm doing much to get this accelerated growth. It's all word of mouth and amplifying user generated content on Twitter.

The current challenge now is retention and converting members from the freemium offering, to the paid offering. And that I believe will come as I continue to add value to the paid offering.

February 25, 2020 20,000 Total Members ๐ŸŽ‰

After just hitting 10k members in September, It's crazy to see how fast 20k has come. It took a year to get my first 1k members, then another year to get to 10k. And now 5 months to get to 20k.

The network effects that come with my product are pretty great. I really need to work on retention and providing value with my premium subscriptions now so that I can start to grow revenue as well.

I'm loving this journey and every week is getting more and more interesting. ๐Ÿ˜

Are the 20k free users? How is conversion to paid going?

    1. 1

Ya, 20k is the total number of members.

I've been working on this for about 2 and a half years but I just opened up subscriptions this past September. Currently I'm at about ~80 subscribers, bringing in about $300 MRR. So not super great but not terrible.

I've still got a lot of work to do to prove the value for the premium tiers. The free tier might be a bit too generous in a few areas but there is a similar product in a different niche that I'm sort of modelling everything after. B2C is really hard and people are fickle but I'm determined to serve this community :D

November 8, 2019 Just hit $100 MRR ๐Ÿ™Œ

Hitting this goal took a lot longer than expected but I learned a lot from it. Just because you put something out there doesn't mean people will buy it. The majority of these subscribers were people I've been talking to for 2 years about my app/site and have supported me from the very beginning.

There are also a good number of people who are waiting for certain features that I've yet to complete. So my goal now is to get those done and then work on improving the experience for existing customers.

      Thanks! ๐Ÿ˜

I'm really excited to see how things grow once I get more social features built into the app/site.

September 15, 2019 Just reached 10,000+ members! ๐ŸŽ‰

It was a lot of chatting with people on twitter, getting a blog post written about my app, people sharing the app with their friends, etc. But finally, I've reached that big milestone.

My next goal is to get 100 subscribers. I'm currently at 15 (since I just soft-launched subscriptions this past week), so only 85 to go! :D

Congrats! I can see a lot of potential here. GG could be come something like GoodReads for gamers. Given the growth in this space, you are definitely onto something.

    1. 1

That's exactly what I'm going for! Goodreads (books) and Letterboxd (movies) have been my biggest inspirations for this project :D

      1. 1

        What's your tech stack?

        1. 2

          Front End - React
          Mobile Apps - React Native
          Backend - Elixir/Phoenix
          DB - Postgres

A massive congrats to you :)
What do you think has worked best for you to reach this milestone?

    1. 1

Well, to be honest, the only thing I've really done is to interact with people a TON on twitter. A few times people have posted the app in places that have gotten a lot of attention. I haven't really done any marketing outside of that.

  3. 1

    Woohoo!
    Congratulations! ๐Ÿ™Œ

  4. 1

Woww!! I wish my app gets that traction once I released it!

    1. 1

      What are you building? ๐Ÿ™‚

      1. 1

        It's call chooseyourplant. https://twitter.com/chooseyourplant

        It's a houseplant marketplace.

        • A place where you can find any houseplant
        • Discover new plants
        • Buy them through affiliates
        • Recommend plants to people
        • A blog included
        • and lots of more things!

The kickoff which is the landing page is almost done.
        The MVP which includes:

        • List of the houseplants page (I introduced the info of 63, but I'm adding plants weekly!)
        • Detail of the plant (care, tips, images, etc)
        • Contact page
        • Business page
        • Affiliate page
        • Sponsors page
and a few things more, it's almost finished too.

The thing that is making me go slow is the fact that I have to search for all the information manually but, it's only once :D

It's a long term project. The idea is to have at least 500 plants or so.

        1. 2

Oh! Awesome I think I am actually already following you on Twitter haha

          1. 2

            haha I appreciate it!

            My activity is about:

            • mental care
            • positivism
            • thoughts
            • tech things some times
            • Products I find in indiehackers or producthunt that I like

and I want to start tweeting about my product increments in chooseyourplant

          2. 1

Finally, I released the landing page here: https://www.chooseyourplant.com/

Could you please give me some feedback ๐Ÿ™? It would mean so much to me https://www.indiehackers.com/post/would-love-to-hear-your-honest-feedback-d1efb7778e

this is an awesome site - really well done work here

Thank you! I've been working hard on it for a long time haha. I also built mobile apps to go with it ๐Ÿ˜

  6. 1

Congrats Charles! Really cool idea. I'm missing another awesome background image for the login page ๐Ÿ˜‚Keep up the good work!

Thanks! I'll get that fixed! It's about time for a refresh on all those images anyways ๐Ÿ˜

August 12, 2019 First MRR milestone: $10

It's taken me 2 years to get this far but I've finally started charging people!

I had a deal 2 years ago that let people pay $1 to lock in a $12/yr subscription and today after releasing the first couple premium features, I decided to message a few of those early adopters to see if they'd like to subscribe early even though not all of the premium features are built yet. So far, everyone has said yes (or "get me at the next paycheck").

I'm still not opening up subscriptions completely yet but it's a great feeling to hit that first milestone of $10 MRR!

August 11, 2019 Award-winning site wrote about my product!

This is the first time anything has been written about my product (that I know of). It was pretty awesome. The editor in chief for JUMPCUT ONLINE had been using GG| for a while and decided to write about it. I was pleased of course. I gave him a couple of paragraphs about my thought behind the product and then he wrote up a review of the app and published it.

Here's the link to the review:

June 13, 2019 Got my first official Subscriber!

I have been working super hard the past week to get the payments system built and I finally got it to a spot today where an early adopter was willing to test it out! Everything went smoothly so now I will be polishing some things around the subscriptions as well as building the premium features ๐Ÿ˜

Hey, the link is down. (heads up!)

    and congrats on the milestone!

    1. 1

Thanks for the heads up... I've noticed it needs a refresh after the latest update, but it seems to be working fine besides that?

      1. 1

I get "This site canโ€™t be reached" when I click https://ggapp.io

        1. 1

That is really strange... Which browser are you using?

          1. 1

            Chrome on Mojavee.

            1. 1

I'm not able to reproduce this. Is there anything helpful in the console logs?

              1. 1

                Where are you hosting?

                  1. 1

Well, I feel like this is causing clouder in your post. We can move the conversation to Twitter.

check the logs on digital ocean, you might find something there. Im logging in from NYC, are the servers supporting east region?

It feels great! I know I have so much more to do though hahaha

March 11, 2019 What it was like to build the first version

Initially, I just wanted a super easy way to find games and to be able to keep track of their status. I actually got most of the MVP done during 4th of July weekend, 2017. Sometime around then, I created a way for people to reserve their usernames and once they did that, I made them an offer to get a lifetime subscription price of $12/year if they pay $1 right then. There were close to 100 users who took me up on that offer and that got me pretty excited. It was the first revenue I'd ever generated on a side project.

March 11, 2019 How I Found My First Customers

I was an active member of a FB group for gamers and so I had a very good resource to get feedback from potential customers. By the time I was ready to launch my MVP, I had about 500 users sign up on the first day. Since then I've grown to about 4100 users as of right now

Oh nice. Was it a case of posting a discussion once? Or something that you've had to do a few times?

    1. 1

Since I am a highly active member in the group, the admins were ok with me sharing updates and encouraging people to sign up so that's what I did :) I still post updates there frequently though at this point I've started my own FB community for the app so I've slowed down a bit posting in that other group

March 11, 2019 How I Came Up With the Idea

A few years ago, I started getting back into gaming after a 10-15 year hiatus and I knew I had missed out on a ton of awesome games. I wanted a way to keep track of all the recommendations I had been receiving from my friends and I didn't really like the options that were available. I decided that I wanted to create my own app/product to handle it.

About

I built GG| to help me keep track of all the awesome looking games that were coming out. I also needed a way to log all the games that I wanted to play from previous generations that I never had a chance to play.
