GifIt
Quickly capture 2-second GIFs with your webcam
I posted the product on Product Hunt to get some user feedback as it felt like a good enough V1.
I found that I had to upload marketing assets to make the Product Hunt page look nice, so I decided to get:
- A screenshot of the page
- A GIF from GitIt itself
- A screen record as a video demo
I think the video demo is very important because it's making it clearer what your product can do. I used Loom to record the screen because I'm used to the tool and it's straightforward (disclaimer: I work at Loom).
The launch was scary, but the Product Hunt community is quite positive (and they love GIFs). The product ended up #4 of the day with more than 200 upvotes!
I found a major issue: the GIFs created by the Proof Of Concept couldn't be published on Twitter and were failing on Discord.
The only option was to switch the library I was using to record the gif.
After testing a couple of libraries, I managed to make it work again. And the GIFs were uploading correctly on Discord/Twitter!
The app was ready for prime time!

I wanted to make sure it was possible. After looking for libraries to help me prototype a solution, I got something that was somewhat working. I decided to get a basic design in place to make it look ok.
This led to a nice-looking prototype, although it was buggy.

I wanted to keep in touch with my YouTube/Twitch community. I thought about using GIFs because they are so personal. I kept things simple to the extreme. The produce does one thing: capturing a 2s GIF with your webcam.
