September 3, 2022 Story

Luca Steeb and I spent around ~20 hours in total during weekends to build https://git-paid.com

It all started with a Telegram chat to a single Notion page following first principle thinking.

We brainstormed the idea abroad with the long term vision then quickly squashed it down to one thing which is the current integration we support.

We added bullet points of the core features of the MVP and moved unnecessary ones to post-mvp phase.

Luca Steeb quickly bootstrapped a REST API using Golang and his own Prisma Go client as the ORM storing data on a postgres database, he dockerized and deployed it to GCP in a matter of minutes (not hours).

I quickly bootstrapped a Next.js app with TypeScript as the language, used Tailwindcss, headless UI and Tailwindui components to quickly build the user interfaces, used axios for the API calls but server state is managed with react-query and instantly deployed it to Vercel, Next.js rewrites were a huge deal here as I didn't have to have the backend locally.

We quickly setup a dev, staging and production environment.

We decided to use Stripe pre-built checkout page, then offer payouts wired directly to users bank accounts but it turns out this requires more effort and resources than sticking with Stripe Connect which Luca easily and quickly implemented.

I reached out to family members and friends to help test out and gather their testimonials which I put on the landing page, fixed bugs and applied some feedback.

Handled SEO and Google analytics using the Gists I shared on LinkedIn recently.

I tried to ISR the public projects/project and profile pages but turns out not so good UX and immediately switched to SSR. (Lighthouse score is greeeeen)

We then prepared for launch on some Discord servers, Product Hunt, Hacker news, Twitter, Here and Instagram while waiting for Stripe to approve the partnership.

If you've read till this part, let me know if you want me to write a series of articles while developing GitPaid.
