June 9, 2015 Launched

I published on hacker news and it made the front page. I got over 1000 app installs and 20 or so paid users.

Product hunt also featured my app without me doing anything, which was cool.
Another website, all about Android, did a highlight as well, was pretty neat.

Whoops this was in 2015. I appreciate the enthusiasm though. I was back filling some of my old products, and I thought I put the date for 2015.

@csallen Can backfilled dates be filtered out from the homepage?

      1. 2

        Will do soon!

How did it work out, 4 years on from this?

The launch was better than I expected, roughly 1500 installs in June 2015, but it quickly died down, 200 ish per month until the new year. I got around 1000 in 2016 in January (people search for habit apps during that time), and I got another spike of 400 in 2017. Other than that it's down to about 30 per month.
I occasionally get a user that emails me and say they love Goalie and it's the best app they've ever used. That's been encouraging for me to work on it but my career took off around the same time, and goalie took a back seat.
All the marketing I ever did was posting on hacker news and have done absolutely nothing since (I guess til today when I posted on IH). Overall, I've earned ~ $300. I think the biggest takeaway for me is it's important to keep talking about your app and blog about it consistently, than it is to have a big successful first launch.

"I think the biggest takeaway for me is it's important to keep talking about your app and blog about it consistently, than it is to have a big successful first launch." This is great insight, and good to hear! (as I plan to launch something and am stressing about timing. But really I can launch it when I decide it's ready and again every month!)

This kind of feedback is underrated as one of the best aspects of launching apps and sites.

I still get emails about old apps I sunsetted saying they miss it so much. Breaks my heart.

Same thing happened to me! I got a bunch of congratulations for an accomplishment that happened last year and felt guilty every time someone commented :)

That's great! That just shows you can have success with a free website using wix. LOL. Can I asked how you presented the website/product? What did you write in your post?

So this actually happened in 2015, I dunno why it posted as recent on IH, but maybe the answer to your question is still useful.

The story is, I made a paid iOS version of Goalie, and they needed a website before I could submit it. So I made one as fast as possible. The iOS version was successful in its own right (paid for the apple developer fee for 2 years).

I think all I did with the landing page for Android was swap out the screenshots from my previous iOS version, hah. I didn't even use it for marketing, it was just there already, so I updated it.

All I did was post to hacker news with a link to the play store. Here's the posting https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=9686665. I think I was on the front page for maybe an hour at most.

    That's great, congrats Dan!!

Congrats. The benefits are clearly thought :)

    Amazing!

This is a harsh reminder to me that the design/ aesthetics of a website doesn't necessarily make or break a great product people want 👌

    Best of luck.

That's cool, congrats! How was your PH launch during this unexpected featuring process? Did they request all the materials for your product presentation page? As I know it's a bit painful to figure out that your project was featured without you even knowing about it :)

This happened in 2015, but IIRC all they asked for was my personal Twitter is all

    Congrats! That's awesome.

We just launched on ProductHunt - got over 1K visits to site and we'll see how many new installs.

About

I could never remember that I wanted to form a habit and all the existing apps only had a daily reminder. I made goalie to have several custom reminders per habit so it'd be hard to forget.
