September 11, 2019 Golang News hits top of Go Reddit

A reader made an android app and submitted it to reddit and its top of the go subreddit today, which is a nice surprise.

Not sure if this will result in a lot of new readers, as the website replaces reddit in a lot of ways, but it's nice to see people extending something you have created.

September 2, 2019 2000 registered users

The site now has 2000 registered users, and has new submissions every day.

Spam protection has probably lowered the number of submissions, as new users will find it much harder to submit, so I need to look at ways to keep spam low while still allowing new users to post. I'd like to avoid a moderation queue if I can.

June 11, 2019 Hit 15k Twitter followers

The twitter account has hit 15k followers now. This is mostly due to posting every day. I ran an experiment posting more frequently (several times a day), by reposting old stories, which increased engagement and follower growth a lot, but at the cost of annoying some regular subscribers, who saw the same post repeated, or complained about older posts making the twitter account. So I've turned that off for now.

May 4, 2019 Dealt with Spam

I saw quite a few spam posts in July, and had to make some changes in order to stop people spamming random dev companies in India. This was probably the same persistent spammer, which is a little disappointing, but it's an inevitable consequence of allow posts/comments on the public internet.

The measures to stop spam were quite simple - I upped the number of points required to post stories/links, which meant that users have to post some comments and get upvoted first, before they can start submitting links. This may discourage some users from posting, which is a shame, but it was necessary to keep the quality of submissions up.

April 12, 2018 Added Twitter bot account

I added a twitter account for Golang News which posts from the website when new stories hit 3 points. This gets automatic posts from the website, and has helped drive engagement a bit. I'm happy just continuing with this project as a hobby for now, as it provides a good source of links to me about Go programming.

January 1, 2017 Launched Golang News

I wanted to see the latest news about Go programming, and don't like the existing communities for this, so hacked something together in Go to serve as a forum. The site attracted some interest though I haven't really promoted it very much, there are people posting new stories every day.

The site was originally called gohackernews, but the domain golangnews.com was donated by someone from the community.

About

This is a hobby project (at least at the moment), because I wanted a community of Go programmers posting the latest go links, and am not very keen on the alternatives (HN too broad, Reddit too harsh).
