September 12, 2026 I’m testing organic distribution for a 5K+ download Android app — here’s what happened so far

I’ve been building GPS Speedometer & Odometer, an Android utility that has passed 5K+ downloads on Google Play.

The app combines a real-time GPS speedometer and odometer with separate Walk/Car trip statistics, route maps, trip history, a parking finder, HUD mode, speed alerts, local backup/restore, and GPX/KML/CSV export.

At this point, my bigger problem isn’t adding more features — it’s distribution. Recent Google Play data suggests the store listing converts reasonably well once people reach it, so I’ve been testing different ways to get the app discovered.

So far:

• Reddit: about 725 post views and still getting a small long tail of traffic.
• AppBrain Featured: a 7-day $49 test produced 40.8k homepage impressions, 402 app-page views and 28 upvotes.
• Product Hunt: very weak for this particular app — the launch finished around #380 with 1 point and almost no external discussion.

I’m now testing Indie Hackers as the next channel and trying to understand which distribution methods make sense for a consumer Android utility.

For anyone who has marketed a consumer Android app:

What would you try next — ASO, niche communities, content/SEO, partnerships, or something else?

I’m also curious whether communities like Indie Hackers are a better fit for SaaS products than for consumer Android apps.

Practical criticism is welcome.

5K+ downloads gives you enough history to compare channels beyond reach. Which source is producing the best retained installs or repeat usage, rather than just store-page traffic?

Good question. I can compare traffic and acquisition changes around each campaign, but I don’t yet have clean source-level retention attribution.

So far, AppBrain produced the most reach, Reddit has had the longest tail, and Product Hunt produced very little engagement. But that doesn’t necessarily mean those channels brought the best long-term users.

My next step is to compare acquisition and retention trends after each promotion window and see whether the organic baseline stays higher afterward. I intentionally haven’t added analytics to the app yet, so source-level repeat usage is still a blind spot.

That’s probably the next thing I need to measure better.

That retention attribution gap is the interesting part. If you’re open to it, what’s the best email to reach you on?

Thanks, Aryan. I’d be interested to hear what you have in mind.

For now, feel free to send me a private message here on Indie Hackers. If email is necessary, I can share the appropriate contact address privately.

About

I built GPS Speedometer & Odometer as a practical Android tool for tracking speed, distance and trips while driving or walking. Over time I added route history, parking finder, HUD and speed alerts.
