March 22, 2023 $400 MRR

Hey Indie Hackers,

I'm excited to announce that my habit tracking app, HabitKit, has just reached $400 MRR! It's been an incredible journey, and I'm grateful for all the support from our users. I received so many messages with valueable feedback and feature requests. That helped me a lot with deciding what to build next and how to grow the app.

Looking ahead, I am really excited to continue improving and expanding HabitKit to help even more people achieve their goals and build the habits they need to succeed. Thanks to every user of HabitKit for being a part of the journey, and here's to the next milestone!

Thanks! I'll try to keep the momentum 🙂

December 20, 2022 HabitKit 1.1 released

As the app gained more users, I've been receiving a lot of feedback and feature requests, which I've taken into account for putting together the newest update: HabitKit version 1.1.

The newest update includes two of the most requested features: streaks and reminders. The streak system allows you to pick a goal (3 x Week, Daily, 20 x Month, etc) and then evaluate your progress based on your past completions. Seeing a streak of consecutive days that you successfully completed a habit can motivate you to keep going and establish a consistent routine.

This update also includes reminders, which you can add to your habits. Setting up a reminder for a certain time and day can help you stay on track and make sure you don't miss a completion.

In addition to these two features, the update also includes several bugfixes and performance optimizations.

Overall, I'm really happy to be able to work on this app and hope that it gains even more traction in the future!

December 13, 2022 $300 of sales in the last 28 days

I'm excited to announce that I've reached a significant milestone as an indie hacker: $300 in monthly sales with HabitKit! This is a big accomplishment for me, and I finally have the feeling that my hard work is paying off.

There have been plenty of ups and downs along the line while building this app, but I'm happy that I've stayed focused and determined, and now I'm seeing the (first) fruits of my labor.

I have big plans for future versions of the app and I'm excited to see where this journey takes me. I'm going to keep working hard, improving my product, and getting it in front of as many people as possible. Building in public on Twitter was a huge success for me and I will definitely continue doing that.

The next version of HabitKit (1.1) will drop at the end of next week and will include reminders, streaks and lots of small optimizations.

Thank you for your support, Aleksandar!

Congratulations Sebastian! As somebody who's launched mobile apps with millions of marketing budget over the past years, I know how difficult it is to successfully launch an indie product on the app stores. The fact that you're now generating stable revenue (assumingly without millions of marketing budget) is wildly impressive to me!

Thank you very much! It was pretty hard, but I have the feeling that my little app business is really growing slowly but steady now 🙏

    Hey Sebastian, that's great!

Do you only use Twitter or were you promoting it on any other platform as well? Can you share some insights?

Hey there, thanks for reaching out! I actually just used Twitter and kind of built this product in public. People really liked it when I posted screenshots of the UI and engaged a lot with my content!

December 2, 2022 Upcoming HabitKit Updates

After receiving a plethora of feedback and feature requests following the initial release of HabitKit, I decided to combine external and internal user feedback and selected three key features to implement in the coming weeks. Many users, myself included, expressed a desire for a streak system, so that is my primary focus. This system will enable users to set goals for their habits and track their progress in the form of streaks based on successful habit completion. Seeing a streak of consecutive days in which a habit has been successfully completed can be incredibly motivating and encourage users to maintain the streak, ultimately helping them to develop a consistent routine and achieve their goals.

In addition to the streak system, I am also implementing a reminders feature to help users stay on track. We all know that it can be easy to forget about small habits, but with the ability to set reminders, users will be less likely to miss a habit completion.

Finally, I am working on incorporating iOS 14 home screen widgets. Many users enjoy the tile-based grid displaying their past habit completions, and they have requested the ability to see this information on their home screens. By implementing home screen widgets, I am making this wish a reality.

These three features represent the most highly requested improvements for HabitKit, and I am committed to bringing them to fruition over the coming weeks.

November 28, 2022 First Sales on Launch Day

It's always super exciting to launch a new app to the App Store and Google Play and I couldn't have imagined a better day than yesterday for this.

The launch in numbers:
💰 MRR: $13
💸 Total Sales: $123
⬇️ Downloads: ~700
🐦 Twitter Impressions: 31.4k

That's a big success for me and a good indicator that I should start implementing more of my feature ideas I had for this app. I also received a lot of feedback or feature requests, which helps me prioritize what I should do next. After receiving the first bug reports I already fixed them in the evening and handed in a new build for review at Apple and Google Play.

Huge thanks to everyone who supported me yesterday, it was a blast! I'll promise to make HabitKit even better!

Congratulations! That's an amazing result, given that the app stores themselves are not great marketing platforms anymore for new apps.

Did most paying users come from Twitter initially?

    1. 1

Thank you! Although I have the suspicion that the App Store gives new apps some kind of "visibility boos", I'm sure that most of the downloads and paying users come from Twitter. But I can't say that for sure!

November 27, 2022 HabitKit is live on the App Store and Google Play

Today is the release day of HabitKit, a minimalistic habit tracking app for iOS and Android.

iOS: https://apple.co/3ilhVDm
Android: http://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.roehl.habitkit
Landing Page: https://www.habitkit.app

The idea for HabitKit came about when I noticed two things:

  • Many of my friends are trying to develop new habits but find it difficult to stick to them
  • Lots of people love the GitHub contribution graph

So I decided to create an app that would help people track their progress and stay motivated by visualizing their consistency with a cool tile-based grid graph.

The app was developed over the course of the last two months only by myself with Flutter. The goal was to create an intuitive and minimal interface that would make it really easy for people to track their completions and keep an overview of their past performance. Future releases of HabitKit will include various new features like a streak-/goal-system, notifications and home screen widgets.

App looks great, but FWIW not having sync across devices and platforms (Android, iOS) is sadly a dealbreaker.

  2. 2

    Looking great! Two questions:

    • Does the recorded progress sync across devices/various instances of the app?
    • If I pay the subscription on iOS, does it work on Android too or is that a separate subscription tier?
If the answer to either question is yes, I'd be curious about what underlying solution you have used.
    1. 2

Hey Dave, thanks for reaching out!

      • Your progress will not be synced automatically between devices. Pro users have the ability to export their data to JSON and import this file at a later point of time.
      • If you're using both iOS and Android you would need to buy/subscribe for each platform. That would probably only be possible by linking the purchase to a user account (which HabitKit doesn't support)

    Great job with this release!
Looks great on iOS. Have you hit any problems/limitations with Flutter?

    1. 1

      Thank you very much!
The only problem I encountered with Flutter is that there is some kind of initial lag for animations on iOS. That's a well-known problem in the Flutter community and the team is actively working on a new rendering solution, so I hope that I will solve that problem soon!

i love the UI so much, but unfortunately, not having sync between my Mac and iPhone is a dealbreaker for me :( would love to purchase the app if this feature rolls out

About

I always love to see the consistency of my coding activities in the GitHub contribution graph and built an app which visualizes all my habits with this kind of graph.
