September 21, 2025 Building an AI Tool That Prevents Haircut Disasters

Motivation

I've always struggled with haircuts. Show the barber a picture, they nod, and somehow I walk out looking completely different.

After another bad haircut, I thought: what if people could see how they'd look with different styles first?

Asked around on Reddit - turns out lots of people have this problem. So I built something for it.

Building the Tool

Spent several months curating and organizing trending hairstyles from various sources. The core challenge was developing sophisticated AI models that could seamlessly blend different hairstyles while maintaining natural-looking results.

Key Lessons Learned

1. Expand Coverage - Collect Preferences from Different Groups

Started with a narrow dataset focused on mainstream styles. When users from different backgrounds tried it, the limitations became obvious. Now actively expanding the style library to represent diverse hair types, textures, and cultural preferences.

The goal is making sure everyone can find styles that work for their unique features and preferences.

2. Listen to User Voice

Built features I thought were cool instead of what users actually needed. Now spend significant time just talking to users. This completely changed our direction - simplified the interface, added features they actually wanted, and prioritized mobile experience.

Users taught me that the value isn't in fancy features, but in helping them feel confident about their appearance choices.

What's Next

Focusing on:

  1. Expanding hairstyle database with more diversity and cultural representation

  2. Improving user experience based on continuous feedback

  3. Making the AI results even more realistic and trustworthy

The mission is simple: help people make better hairstyle decisions and feel more confident about how they look.

This is a solid idea. I honestly dread haircuts. You are solving a cool problem.

I’ve just tried it! It does give pretty good results. I uploaded any random photo, it would be great since releasing user data is so sus, to have an avatar stand in to model the hair or just ar to see what it might look like? Just thoughts thanks for creating this tool
