We built Hilite because too many good ideas never make it past the recording stage

Hi Indie Hackers, I’m Dumi, cofounder of Hilite.

The idea for Hilite came from my own experience creating a podcast called Zimbabwean Voices. The purpose of that show was to amplify stories and perspectives that were often overlooked. But I quickly learned that having something valuable to say and actually publishing it are two very different things.

Recording was only the beginning. Then came audio cleanup, editing, transcription, show notes, hosting, distribution, and promotion. The workflow was fragmented, technical, and time-consuming. Every time I had to move between tools, there was another opportunity to lose momentum.

That experience led me to a broader realization: many podcasts do not fail because the creator has nothing worthwhile to say. They fail because complexity, cost, perfectionism, and self-doubt make publishing feel harder than it should.

What we’re building

Hilite is an all-in-one podcast creation platform designed to remove that friction.

You can record or upload audio, enhance the sound, edit by changing the transcript, generate episode content, and publish your podcast without leaving the browser. The goal is not to turn every creator into an audio engineer. It is to help people move from having an idea to sharing it professionally.

We are building Hilite for creators, coaches, academics, entrepreneurs, entertainers, business owners, activists, and anyone else who wants to give voice to something they believe in. These are often people who are rich in ideas but short on time. They want their work to sound professional, but they do not want to spend weeks learning complicated editing software.

Our point of view

I believe technology should amplify human expression, not replace it.

AI is useful when it removes repetitive work, improves a recording, or helps a creator get unstuck. But the voice, story, and perspective should always remain human. The technology is the enabler, not the hero.

That belief shapes how we are building Hilite. We want the product to feel simple, thoughtful, and encouraging. Podcast editing should feel like momentum, not a technical maze.

Where we are going

Our long-term ambition is for Hilite to become the default starting point for anyone who wants to share their voice with the world.

Success for us is not simply another file being processed. It is someone who had been sitting on an idea finally publishing it. It is a creator who thought their voice did not matter discovering that it does.

I’m sharing Hilite here because I would love to connect with other founders building creator tools, AI products, audio software, or bootstrapped SaaS businesses.

I’d especially value feedback on one question: What has been the biggest source of friction between creating something and actually publishing it?
