September 14, 2019 First week stats & 100 plants added

As today marks 1 week since I quietly opened up registration I thought I'd share some stats from the first week. Considering the only marketing I've really done is by posting the odd thing on a relevant subreddit I'm pleasantly surprised at the return.

App:
👤 30 registered users
🌿 106 plants created

Landing page:
👤 140 users
🇺🇸 89 from the US
🇨🇦 16 from Canada
🇬🇧 15 from the UK

📱 119 on mobile
🖥 19 on desktop
📱 2 on tablet

My initial aim was to get an MVP live which I did, I also now have some feedback from the first users. My new aim is to improve the landing page to help convert more users to registrations. I'm also working on a Stripe integration and new features so I can begin to charge for an upgraded plan with extra features, keeping the current functionality free.

Very specific niche! What are your plans for monetization? Also more info/screenshots on the sign up page would be nice.

For monetization I'm going to add monthly plans (with discounted annual) which will give the user more advanced info they can add to their plant as well as the option to add a picture too.

Initially I was building this to scratch my own itch and also wanting something to build and focus on outside of my day job, so I wasn't really intending on releasing it and making anything from it. It's also helped me learn the various parts I need to make future SaaS products (authentication, Stripe integration etc) which I'd not done previously so even if I don't gain many paid subscribers, I consider this a successful project as I can use it as a framework for my next idea.

I'm currently hosting on free tiers of Netlify and Heroku so other than the domain name, ongoing costs are free!

        Great app!
I've just put it on my to-check list. Do you provide some intelligence on how to grow plants? For instance, X plant should be watered 2 times a week, or should get direct sunlight, etc.?

        1. 1

Not at the moment as I’ve struggled to find an API I can use for this info but I’m hopefully of finding something eventually!

I'm basically in the same boat with my exercise app. Made it for me, but put it out there. We'll see how that goes.

It’s win win that way really isn’t it, don’t expect anything but if you do then great!

You should consider adding some screenshots! It's kind of a blackbox

To the landing page you mean? I agree, that’s going to be a Sunday morning job this weekend I think 😁

Big congrats dude! Numbers look very healthy!

Thanks! It's really put my mind at ease that this was worth building, I just wish I'd perhaps made a better landing page to convert a higher number of users but you have to open up the door at some point 🤷🏻‍♂️

Hopefully users will stick around now and find it worth paying a small monthly fee for when I've added a few more features.

This is a nice project. I have just signed up.
Would be nice to have a list with names of the plants in the drop-down. It would make it easy to add many of them at the same time. Oh and the rooms too.

Nice job! Keep working on it!

    Monetising too early?

I would have looked for more usage/longer retention & usage stats to derive monetisation strategy.

September 7, 2019 Opened up reg and posted to Reddit

After initially only opening up registration to the few people that I got signed up to the mailing list, today I opened up registration on the landing page to anyone that discovers House Plant Tracker.

I also posted in a house plant subreddit this morning and in the first hour it's attracted two new sign ups and one user has added 6 plants to their account.

September 6, 2019 Launched MVP

I finally launched the MVP of House Plant Tracker to the 11 users who had registered interest over the past month.

I hadn't really done a lot of marketing, other than setting up an Instagram profile and posting in Reddit whenever I saw someone asking advice on how to track their plants and watering etc so I was quite pleased I managed to get 11 people registering interest in less than a month.

Now I'm hoping some of the users sign up for an account and start adding plants so I can get some actual user feedback.

    How was it so far?

    1. 1

I've currently had 3 of those users register an account and only 1 plant added to an account. Unsure why those users decided to not go ahead and add plants/only add one.

Did you send them only 1 email? Try sending a few.

        1. 1

Yeah just the one. I'll give it some time over the weekend and see if anything happens then maybe send another next week but try and time it better. Looking at Hotjar, they signed up then closed it immediately so I'm wondering if they were maybe too busy.

August 8, 2019 Set up basic landing/sign up page

I set up a super basic sign up page to collect emails for when the MVP of House Plant Tracker is ready to go live.

There are currently 7 people on the list, mainly coming from Reddit where I’ve posted a link to the sign up page whenever someone has asked for an app/website to track their plants.

Scratching my own itch, I currently track 40+ house plants on a spreadsheet but needed something a little more bespoke.
