HR Partner
Cloud based Human Resource management for busy teams
As most know, one of the best ways of success in B2B startups is to get recognition and reviews from your ideal customers, which in turn leads to more customers seeing them and trusting you with their business as well.
I recall in the early days, back when I was a solo founder, we had a mere 3 reviews posted on Capterra, and it stayed that way for over 12 months.
I mean, they were 3 positive reviews, but it seemed like such a struggle to get more than that. In the meantime, I watched our competitors seemingly get hundreds of glowing reviews so effortlessly. It was really discouraging.
But yet, we kept our heads down and focused on just providing the best possible customer service that we could, and just ignored the B2B directories for a while.
So imagine my delight and surprise to see Xero Magazine publish this tweet this week:
It felt so nice to be finally getting such industry recognition for all our hard work.
And I must stress that I really didn't have much to do with this. It was really the sheer hard work that our team puts in to listen and respond to customers, and constantly delighting them with our friendly, yet professional support levels - which includes going above and beyond what is expected on many occassions.
Very happy, grateful, and proud of my team. I want to say a public "Thank You" to them for all they do.
As my tweet yesterday - https://twitter.com/dsabar/status/1442644719608102919
Not going to lie - the first few years were a grind and really challenging, and I thought about giving up quite a number of times.
But lately, I have been waking up all excited and with a spring in my step, and I feel that all that early sacrifice has finally paid off, with things humming along really well, and my SaaS growing steadily.
I've always said the #1 traits for a startup founder is perseverance and resilience. So glad I stuck with it and pushed through to a great place where I am really happy now.

very happy for you, it can be tough going, i know, hopefully i am at the tail end of getting the breaks where it pays off. may i ask you about capterra and g2crowd, did you organically get reviews with them or sponsored, they keep emailing me to "purchase" something. thanks again.
-

Hi Rishi, Thanks for all your messages of support. With Capterra/G2, initially (about 4 years ago), we just used organic listings there, which worked OK, so we invested in a CPC marketing campaign. That actually worked VERY well for us for about a year or so, but then the referrals simply dried up with no real reason. I think it was too much competition on the platform.
We still keep a token CPC campaign with them, which generates a few leads, but nowadays we are seeing better results from social media ad campaigns, and Google Adwords (both of which were woeful 4 years ago when Capterra was working well for us).
It seems to be 'swings and roundabouts' with B2B SaaS marketing - things will work for a while, then they will stop working, but then come back into fashion much later! The trick is knowing when to hop off the 'wrong' train and onto the 'right' one for the time.
-
1
Appreciate your comments! you're absolutely right about swings and roundabouts and knowing when to jump off. I guess i would need to start with organic G2/capterra first. How about organic search? Seems like that isn't the bulk of your traffic.
-
1
(apologies for the delay in replying)
No, organic search doesn't do too much for us, mainly because our product name is a generic term - "HR Partner". Maybe if we called it "Aychar Partnrz" or something it might work better? 😅 We do get a lot of search hits, but really generic searches and very low quality (not likely to be customers).-
1
thats super interesting... so most of your traffic is paid, but it sounds like the conversion ratio makes it worth while, also being higher quality then organic searches.
awesome good for you.

We were please to note that we made it high on the list in June for the SoftwareAdvice frontrunner chart for HR software vendors.
We outranked a lot of our competitors who are funded to the tune of millions of dollars, so it was nice to see our scrappy, bootstrapped startup made it high in terms of usability and customer satisfaction.
SoftwareAdvice is one of the largest B2B review and recommendation sites out there, and is responsible for a large number of customers coming to us after reading our reviews there, so fingers crossed that this recent accolade will bring in more customers and help us grow!
The high customer satisfaction rating is in large part due to our small but dedicated team being really focused on looking after our customers and providing the best support that we can - after all, we haven't got deep pockets to spend on marketing campaigns, so our differentiator from our funded competitors is to outpace them in terms of customer service.
I am really grateful to be working with such an amazing team!

Congrats on your achievement Devan. It's really nice to hear startup stories outranking biggies. Had an experience once in 2018, Google outranked our 3-month old small sports news site against 'FIFA', SportsIllustrated, & many other behemoth sports news sites & I was like 'wow' !

Congratulations! it is not easy to beat other companies with an unlimited budget.
I see you have been growing upward these days. What marketing channels are working? What are you doing differently now that keeps you growing MoM?
Why don't you have an affiliate/partner program yet?
Well, this week marked one whole year that I have been earning a regular, steady pay check from my startup! (AND a 50% raise halfway through last year as well to boot).
After previously living for nearly 4 years on savings (and my wife having to work 3 jobs to keep the family fed), it is a nice thing to be in a place where all our household bills, and living expenses are now pretty much taken care from what HR Partner is bringing in.
Biggest win is that my wife has been able to go back to ONE part time job (which she loves), plus spend some time on her art passion (https://www.instagram.com/samsabaratnam/).
Next goal is to earn enough to put some savings aside again, and have my wife not having to work so she can go full time on her art - she deserves it after all the unflagging support she has given me over the years.

In the spirit of sharing the 'not so good' along with the great stuff happening at my startup - We have this month noticed a levelling off in our previously fantastic growth rate.
Churn has gone up from around 1 customer per month in the past to about 4 or 5 just this month so far.
We reach out to these customer as part of our customer care, and the message we are getting back is that they LOVE our system, but things are really financially tough at the moment, or in one case, we suspect the business itself is closing due to no activity in their industry sector.
This was actually something the team and I had in the back of our minds when we started getting huge growth at the start of the worldwide pandemic. We knew that the initial spike would have to be countered by a down turn when the economic reality hit a few months later.
A lot of businesses have been chugging along on government grants and subsidies during the various lockdowns around the planet, however it is coming to the end of those lifelines, and with things still uncertain, I think a lot of business will really be cutting back drastically on expenditure or closing altogether.
It is sad times, but the reality of what is happening in the world right now. Thankfully, we have not had to take a cent of government incentives during this time, and we have managed to help a LOT of companies get good HR processes in place while they have been in hibernation, using our SaaS platform. We are still growing, but not nearly at the same rate as the past few months, but still - we will carry on helping other businesses as best we can.
This morning I checked my phone and noticed that for the first time, we had hit six figures in our bank account. This was after paying nearly all expenses for the month including salaries etc.
It is a great feeling to know that we have such a runway now that we can reinvest into building our SaaS to the next level. Also this week, we welcomed a new developer to our team that has made my (programming) life much easier too.
Oh, and we also released a new major feature in our HR app that our users had been asking for.
All in all, a massive week for us, and as a result, the team has supported me to take a full week off, completely away from work and technology so I can recharge my batteries after a hectic few months of growth.
That is probably the biggest win for me - that I now have an amazing co-founder and team that can keep things running really well while I switch off and focus on other passions for a week.

Woke up this morning and checked our SaaS dashboard like I always do, and had to hold back an emotional tear as I saw that we had hit 1000 companies who have subscribed to our HR SaaS.
It was truly a big milestone for us. I have been working on my startup now for about 4 and a half years. I can still remember the days of having just 3 customers, then getting to 10. Hovering at around 15 for a while before finally hitting another ledge with 23 customers.
Then there was a long, slow ascent to 100 customers (which I posted about on here a few months back). But then it seems like a bit of a rocket ride to 1000. It almost snuck up on me in amongst everything else that is happening at the moment.
I consider luck and timing a big part of that, as a big influx of new users are companies that are suddenly finding themselves with a remote, work from home team, and they need a solution to manage this drastic change from an HR perspective.
I am grateful that we have a product that can help people in such a difficult time, and I do feel for those businesses and startups that are struggling right now because of the huge changes enforced upon us by the pandemic.
I also wanted to say to any other IndieHacker out there who is doing it tough - sometimes you just need to have faith in your vision, and hang in there. There were SO many times that I wanted to call it a day and pull the plug, especially when growth stagnated, and I lost my first co-founder.
But in reality - that 'stagnation' really gave us time to improve our product based on the feedback of that small customer base. (No way we can iterate as fast with the larger customer base that we have now). Also, my new co-founder who took over has amazing marketing skills and has grown the business 100x in a shorter space of time compare to her predecessor.
Somehow, every negative seems to have a downstream positive effect.
Many thanks to my co-founder, and my family for their untiring support, and a huge shout out to our growing team who are all just amazing at what they do to help me execute my vision.
Also, thanks to the incredible community right here at IH for tips, advice and your own stories that kept me going through the tough times.

I'm so happy for you mate really well done!
Hitting milestones like that really is an amazing feeling, I remember getting my first conversion and I jumped around my room like a kid hahahah
Also congrats on having such a strong team/co-founder, (not talking from experience) but I can only imagine how helpful that would be!
Congrats again :D

Big congratulations to you! 4.5 years is a long time! Losing a co-founder is equally terrible. But things turned out well! Yay!

Amazing. Its inspiring to read posts like this. Congratulations, I hope you continue to grow.
If you don't mind me asking, what is your tech stack? And could you give us some marketing tips from your awesome co-founder? Who seems to be a whiz at marketing.

Thank you! We host everything on AWS basically - we use over 20 of their services, including EC2, RDS, SES, SQS, Lambda, Elastic Beanstalk, S3, Route 53 and many many more.
I did do a blog post a few months back on some of the marketing things that helped us (most of which were instigated by my co-founder) - https://devan.codes/blog/2019/11/29/my-chinese-bamboo-startup

Congrats Devan, on completing 1K customers in such a crowdy space. You must have done pretty well with your product. I am yet to feel that feeling of first paid customer for my side project.

Congratulations, persistence pays off! It’s encouraging to see the stories of people who trudge through years of slow growth to become successful. It gives hope to the rest of us. All the best in the future.

Thank you! Yes, I think stories like ours is more the norm. We usually hear of the 'overnight successes' on most blogs and podcasts, but I believe those are the rarity, and that 90% of startups are mostly trudging and grinding for a long while!

God damn, congratulations!
1,000 paying customers is insane.
How long did it take you guys to get from Customer #1 to Customer #100?
-
2
Thank you Jayber!
Customer 0 to 1 was 1 whole year(!), then 1 to 25 took us about another 18 months, then 18 another months again from 25 to 100. Then 100 to 1000 was about 3 months! We had an AppSumo promotion in there too which helped in a HUGE way - I plan to write a blog post about our AppSumo experience next month.

HOLY GUACAMOLE.
You have the persistence of a God man.
How did you even maintain the motivation to keep going, even as the numbers looked bleak and demoralizing?
I have a crazy amount of respect for you.
And I'm so happy that your SaaS company is finally seeing its growth spurt!
I'm reading your Chinese Bamboo blog article, and this part truly resonated with me:
Did you know that when you plant Chinese bamboo seeds in the ground, that it can take up to 4 or 5 years for the first shoots to show? And did you know that as soon as the first shoots emerge, it then only takes about 6 weeks for the plant to grow to reach 90 feet in the air? The trick here though, that you still have to nurture and care for those seeds through all those years of not being able to see anything above ground. Otherwise you won’t get that dramatic growth spurt at the end.
Keep going, my man. I'm so happy for you that your persistence has finally paid off.
0-1: 12 months
1-25: 18 months
25-100: 18 months
100-1,000: 3 months
1,000-10,000: ???What's the projection here? ;)
-
2
Haha - Thank you again Jayber! You are too kind.
As for 10,000 - who knows? My co-founder and I would love to be at that level in 12 months time, but there are so many unknown variables in the air now due to the pandemic etc. While we are grateful that we have had this huge surge in new customers (in many ways, due to the pandemic changing their work situation), it is sadly looking like some of those customers may struggle to stay in business themselves if the lockdowns continue for an extended period.
Overall though, we are seeing a really positive 'knock on' effect from having a large customer base. We have a ton of reference sites, and proof of validation (Just 2 days ago, we won a new fairly large customer in Singapore purely because we had 30 other Singapore based customers - Just 6 months ago, we had zero customers in that region!).
I am terrible at setting goals (I predicted it would be about 18 months before we went from 100 to 1000!), but I just want to take the next 12 months making sure that we really look after our 1000+ customers, plus grow our team in a manageable way, then tackle the next stage of growth.
I will keep posting updates here - good and bad, and keep learning from this great community.
-
1
Great! I'll be staying tuned to your updates.
From the sound of your blog article, taking on your co-founder was a total game changer, as she brought a completely-fresh (and correct) perspective to your strategic direction as a company.
Would you have gone out to look for a co-founder earlier had you known that it would have accelerated your growth curve faster?
-
2
I actually had another co-founder early on in the business (when we were at 0 customers), but unfortunately, quite lacking in the marketing and sales discipline & expertise, which is the main reason they had to move on a couple of years ago.
After that, I wasn't actively looking, but I was approached last year by my current co-founder out of the blue when she saw an opportunity with my startup on another community forum. She had already built and sold 2 previous startups successfully, so I agreed to her coming on board, and wow, the difference between someone who says they know marketing and someone who actually knows marketing - is chalk and cheese, as is evidenced by our latest growth trajectory.

Wow ! Just from february ! Good job !
How much is the MRR now ?
EDIT: Just checked your product, it's amazing (just try to edit the links on "features")
-
1
Thanks! Actually, I have to go and do some calculations to work out what our current MRR is - it is not straightforward any more.
We now have our standard monthly/annual subscriptions, but we also now have some huge (1000 employee+) customers on a separate contract. Plus we also had a massive AppSumo promotion a couple of months back which isn't really recurring revenue which I have to factor in, AND we also recently launched an affiliate reseller partner program, so I have to work out the differing commissions on those to work out our component of the MRR. Whew, lots of accounting homework for me to do! (but I guess it is a good problem to have).

well done it must've been an amazing feeling and rewarding as well to know you were right not to give up prematurely! what you said reminds me of Steve Jobs in this video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ptD0T-ZcF2M: "getting fired from Apple was the best thing that could've ever happened to me... during the next 5 years I started Next, Pixar and got married. I'm pretty sure none of this would've happened if I hadn't been fired from Apple".
-
1
Thanks ludd - yeah, if there is one thing that I hope others take away from these sorts of stories is that the 'bad stuff' can be the precursor to something better. It is definitely hard to see it when you have your back to the wall and feeling that everything is against you though. That's when you need a good friend or mentor that can keep you focused and on track. I am grateful that I had people around me at those times that helped in those ways.

Not sure if this counts as a milestone, but I guess it does.
I was called by an old work colleague of mine that I hadn't heard from for years. She asked if I was interested in walking away from my startup and to leave Australia and move to another big international city to work alongside her in a senior role. (She works at one of the FAANG companies).
I politely said "Thanks, but No".
If that call had come in a couple of years ago, when I was still grinding and building my SaaS startup, I would have jumped at the chance with bells on.
But today, while chatting to her, I realised how much I love my startup, and how well growth (and financial returns) have been lately, and how it would be really hard from me to walk away from it all.
Call me crazy, but I would still rather be master of my own destiny, especially at this stage of my company's growth. I am too excited to see where I can take HR Partner. The senior exec role and share bonuses will just have to wait a while.
I still clearly remember 2 years ago sitting despondently in my office, seeing that we only had about 6 paying customers to our HR SaaS. I remember thinking back then "If only I can get to 100 paying customers, that would be so great and mean so much"... But it seemed too far away and such an impossible task.
But just yesterday morning, I glanced at our company KPI dashboard and noticed that we had 103 paying customers on the books. I actually had to pause as I became emotional thinking back about how important that milestone had seemed to me, and I nearly missed it! 😄
Actually, at the time of writing this, we are up to 110 paying customers. It makes me ecstatic that all the hard work me and my co-founder have put in over the past 6 months have paid off. Most of the credit actually belongs to my amazing co-founder and the marketing team/strategies she has put in place since joining the company.
Now - onwards and upwards for the next milestone - 1000 paying customers! 🚀

Amazing milestone, congrats! Hope to be posting a similar milestone some day.
Just some feedback on your landing page. You mentioned the phrase "tools the big boys use". I reckon your target HR market are predominantly female and I wouldn't be surprised if you lost a few visitors due to this phrase being interpreted as non-inclusive.
Most people would get that it's an old phrase but it's the way the world is now.
-
2
Hey James - Thank You.
And great feedback. I've actually had a couple of other people point this out recently. Ironically, it was my (female) co-founder who came up with this strapline - she is in charge of the marketing side of the business. I'll have a chat with her and see if we can come up with a better way to express this benefit.

Congratulations Devan, once you ll hit 1000, 10 k would not be that difficult, and at the same time most difficult of them all still would be first 100.
Keep at it, you have got it.
-
1
Thank you Nikhil. Wow, I haven't even considered 10K yet, but that would be my ultimate dream. Big challenge now is building a team so that when we do get to 4 and 5 figures, we can still be know for the great customer service that we provide now. I never want to lose that aspect of my startup.

Congrats @Devan, great news! Would be happy if you could share your AppSumo results here from time to time. :)

Congrats Devan! Love the landing page. 👍
We're in the middle of validating our SaaS and hoping to hit similar milestones one day.
Keep up the awesome work!

Thank you Yarty. Yes, we've revamped our landing page a couple of time, and I am really happy with what we have now. If you have the resilience and patience to stick with the early grind, I am sure you will make it. It took longer than I expected to get where we are today, but the road certainly seems easier and smoother these days.

Congrats. I know your pain. Slow and steady wins the race.

Thank you! Yes, I really wish someone had coached me in the early days and kept reminding me that the early days will be a harder grind than you expect, but once you are over that hurdle, things will begin to get easier.

Congrats! When we imagine milestones like this, the reality feels so much different when we actually hit them, they just feel normal by the time we get there... Take yourself out to dinner and enjoy your weekend, tell all your friends & family, and congratulate yourself - take in the moment!
-
1
Thanks Pat. That was the weird thing. I had set it as an important goal early on, but as we got closer to it, I kind of lost focus on it in all the rush and I surprised/disappointed myself that I had pretty much missed something I considered a big milestone.
And celebrating wins is another big weakness of mine - I tend to not stop and celebrate the big (and little) wins like I should, so this weekend I am going to take time out for a little celebration. 🎈

Hi neeraga - I distilled some of my thoughts on marketing in this blog post a couple of months back: https://devan.codes/blog/2019/11/29/my-chinese-bamboo-startup
Hope it is useful to you (and other IH-ers).

Well, today was a special day for me. After nearly 3 years of living on saving and my wife having to run 3 part time jobs to support my family, I managed to take the first of what are to be regular paychecks from my startup.
Coming just before the Christmas holidays, this is welcome indeed, and it is a special feeling to have your SaaS product doing well enough that the bank balance keeps increasing every month even after my earnings are taken out.
I made the decision to go all in a couple of years back, and shut down my other consulting business that was generating income for me because it was keeping me from really focusing on HR Partner. That added focus has really helped to maximise how effective my development, sales and marketing energy has translated into new customers and revenue.
Next step - more hiring!
