Humans in Tech
A casual approach to professional networking in tech
The idea for this app came from a final project assignment for a 4th year mobile development course. We first started off by building a social networking app for developers to collaborate on personal projects. The project then evolved from being strictly focused on personal projects to a community where developers can post questions and give advice. We then quickly figured that there are such existing communities like dev.to and we needed to pivot our approach. We decided to broaden the target audience from developers to people in the tech industry in general and make our focus on 1-on-1 personal connections.
In our experiences of getting internships and jobs, we understood the value of networking and getting referrals. We also noticed that interns and undergrads tend to prefer more casual forms of communication like slack, discord, and facebook groups rather than using Linkedin which has a more professional vibe. We then decided to build a platform for building connections much more casually and focus on building personal relationships.
We developed the app in 2 months and started testing it between our friends. We then decided to go one step further and share it with a private facebook group to get more people on it. After that, we decided that our MVP is ready for a larger release and are now testing it with public communities and groups.
