Hydejack
A boutique Jekyll theme for hackers, nerds, and academics.
Hydejack is now permanently discounted by 1/3rd, bringing it in line with other premium themes.
Looking at some of them without the presupposition that mine must be better because I know some JavaScript, I can see that they're actually better design-wise and invoke much more positive feelings (On a side note, I have to get rid of that picture that's way too dark and somehow reminds me of drowning. Not that I have any experience with that).
After running ads that I thought would result in a self-reinforcing sales loop, but instead resulted in crickets, it's obvious that $99 for a Jekyll theme in 2020 is not the market clearing price. That pricing was based on ego-magical calculus of how much time I've spent on this, not how much value it provides over alternatives, which is — now evidenced by facts — slim.
With a regular price, more people will be able to derive some value form this, while I can stop scrambling to justify the high price with more and more obscure features, which is a good thing overall.
In other news, I've removed all mention that the discounts are based on geography and instead just apply them to the would-be price of $99. I've figured that making people feel poor is a very bad, no good idea, and I'm glad it only took me a week to figure that out~~
Found a way to pre-apply the Purchasing Power Index discounts to the Gumroad plugins on the site.
Before, visitors had to find and apply the codes themselves. Worse, if someone didn't see the code, the stated price on the site and Gumroad would be different, likely causing a lot of confusion.
Now I'm wondering if I should release a service for the PPI adjustment as a separate product 🤔
Added dynamic discount codes based on a location's purchasing power index.
E.g. someone from Austria would pay 70% of the dollar reference price (Switzerland), while someone from India only pays 40% and so on, which should increase sales from many countries.
Version 9 is the most complete version of Hydejack yet.

Service release 8.5 includes a number of obvious improvements made possible by changes in the way the web works.
Better Dark Mode
This service release includes a major improvement to dark mode, which is now matching the operating system’s default. This is already possible in Safari, and just this week a new version of Chrome shipped with this feature as well.
Hydejack 8.3.0 introduces new options to bring Hydejack’s build time in line with other Jekyll themes.
Hydejack was designed with personal sites in mind, i.e. sites with around 100 pages. Because of this, build speed hasn’t been a major concern during its development. When attempting to use Hydejack with thousands of pages this becomes very apparent, as build times go from seconds, to minutes, to hours.
I'm so convinced that passive income doesn't exist that I refuse to believe it, even as it is happening to me. I feel like I should put some work in again sometime.
The PRO version of Hydejack now includes an optional Dark Mode, making it the first Jekyll theme to include this feature (to my knowledge).
