I recently launched Idea2PatentAI, an AI-powered patent drafting platform built for founders, startups, and inventors who want to protect what they’re building—without navigating the traditional patent process or Big Law pricing.

After 15+ years as a patent attorney, I kept seeing founders and startups face the same dilemma:

1.     Try to draft a patent application on their own, which often results in a thin or incomplete disclosure that doesn’t meaningfully protect the invention

2.     Hire a patent attorney, which can be prohibitively expensive at the earliest stages

Idea2PatentAI is our attempt to create a practical middle ground: an AI-guided, inventor-first drafting workflow designed for users with little or no patent experience. It helps non-attorneys draft comprehensive provisional patent applications without needing to become patent experts or commit to traditional legal fees upfront.

The goal isn’t to replace lawyers—it’s to offer an alternative that allows early-stage founders to affordably file a high-quality provisional patent application and protect their ideas for up to a year. One of the key advantages of a provisional filing is the 12-month window it provides to further develop the invention before committing to the cost and formality of a full, non-provisional patent application. During this period, founders and startups can continue to test, experiment, build, refine, and validate their inventions while preserving their priority rights. Once the idea has been validated and/or begins generating revenue, they can then decide whether it makes sense to invest in a full non-provisional application.

Idea2PatentAI was founded with the mission to democratize access to patent services by making high-quality patent drafting tools more accessible and affordable to all users—not just law firms and patent attorneys.

Nearly all existing AI patent drafting platforms are designed for experienced practitioners and rely on expensive, long-term subscription pricing, placing them out of reach for many individual inventors, entrepreneurs, and early-stage startups.

Idea2PatentAI takes a different approach. We built an inventor-first, self-service platform that allows users to draft complete provisional patent applications on their own, using a guided AI workflow and a simple, one-time pricing model.

By lowering cost, complexity, and time barriers, Idea2PatentAI empowers creators to protect their ideas earlier in the innovation process and move toward “patent pending” status without waiting months or incurring thousands of dollars in fees. Our goal is to give innovators practical, affordable tools to take ownership of their intellectual property—on their own terms.

• AI Invention Disclosure Enhancement: Our AI engine analyzes the invention details provided by a user to identify missing, vague, or incomplete aspects of invention details—and provides specific recommendations for strengthening the disclosure.

• Instant AI Drafting: Once the invention details are enhanced by our AI engine, the platform generates a complete provisional patent application with a single click.

• AI-Powered Creative Brainstorming: Our AI engine suggests different ways in which the technology associated with an invention may be extended to new applications that may have been overlooked by inventors, thereby expanding protection beyond the initial concept.

• Technology-Specific Detection & Adaptation: Our AI engine detects the technology area (software, electronics, mechanical, etc.) associated with an invention and automatically adapts the content of the application to satisfy technology-specific requirements. 

• AI-Powered Application Editor: If desired, customers can leverage our AI-powered editor to further refine and finalize application drafts that are generated by our platform.

• Comprehensive Applications:  On average, users who enter a ~500-word description of their invention can expect to receive an application that is 35-55 pages in length (even more comprehensive when more invention details are provided). The platform generates complete provisional application with USPTO-compliant sections—including a title, technical field, background, summary, detailed description, claims, and abstract.
