August 13, 2026 Cold start: how I'm trying to get my first 300 users

I built ImageCopyrightChecker after a DMCA scare. Now I'm in the awkward cold-start phase with a working product but no audience.

My plan:

  1. Product Hunt launch this week

  2. SEO content targeting "how to check image copyright"

  3. Reddit & community Q&A (no spam, just helping)

Current status: live, with 5 free checks on signup.

If you've launched a B2C tool before — what worked for getting your first 300 real users? I'm especially curious about pricing feedback and onboarding friction.

The 5 free checks is a nice touch for something like this because the value is pretty easy to understand after one real use. And building it from an actual DMCA scare gives the product a much more believable reason to exist.

Feels like this could be pulling a lot more organic traffic than it probably is right now, especially given how specific the problem is and how early you are with the first 300 users.

I’d be curious what you’re learning from the first few people who actually use all five checks.

Thanks for the thoughtful comment — really appreciate it.

Right now I have 6 registered users, but honestly, none of them have actually used all five checks yet. So I don’t have real usage patterns to learn from yet — that’s the part I’m most eager to unlock.

Organic traffic is also still very low. I’m trying to fix that with SEO content and community help like this, but it’s early days. If you have thoughts on how to get those first real users to actually try the tool, I’m all ears.

You’re actually sitting on a pretty interesting SEO opportunity here. The pain point is very specific, and people who need an image copyright check are already actively searching for a solution; this isn’t something you have to convince them to care about.

From what I can see, there’s still a lot of room to build out the search footprint around this problem. If you can start owning the right queries and supporting them with relevant content and authority, organic search could become a much bigger acquisition channel than it is today.

I have a few ideas on how I’d approach the SEO + authority side for ImageCopyrightChecker, especially around turning the existing pain point into a much larger search footprint.

The first 300 users probably won't tell you much unless you separate acquisition from activation. It'd be useful to know where people drop between discovering the tool, running a check, and coming back to use it again.

      Thanks — that's a really useful distinction.

I've been thinking of everything as one blurry number, but you're right: I need to separate acquisition from activation.

I want to set up a simple funnel — visit → signup → first upload → purchase → return — but honestly, I'm still figuring out how to instrument that cleanly with such a small sample size.

Yeah, that funnel should make the early signal much easier to interpret. The return step will probably be especially interesting once you have enough users to see a pattern. If you’re open to continuing the conversation, what’s the best email to reach you at?

About

I received a copyright demand letter for an image I wrongly assumed was free. Manual reverse-searching every image was painfully slow, so I built this to make copyright checks instant and stress-free for creators.
