Start-up Marketing Just Got a Whole Lot Easier!

March 11, 2020 Launched a Startup Marketing Course on PH!

This course is something I've been working on for months now.

And after some amazing feedback on the BETA version, I finally launched the full course on Product Hunt today - and even got hunted too! 😲

We all know startup marketing is hard. But equally, online courses are either too theoretical or not designed for startups.

Hence why I developed this course - it's actionable, practical, uses lots of different formats (video, tools, templates...) to suit different learning styles, and helps startups get results, fast.

I'd love for all your feedback and support!

December 1, 2019 Got my first paying customer!

This week, I astoundingly got my first paying customer! Ok, it’s only one so far, but you’ve got to start somewhere, right?
I’ve done minimal marketing so far, so I’m actually really stoked that someone has found the product, signed up and then upgraded, all in one go!
Here’s hoping it’s the first of many! 🤞🤞

Congratulations! The first one is where the magic starts :) I know for me getting my first customer broke down a lot of mental barriers in my head - what seemed only a dream was now tangible. I wish you much success! Keep us updated on your progress, both the ups and the downs.

How did you get your first customers, cold calls/emails or just general brand marketing?

    1. 2

I’ve only listed the product on the usual sites like Product Hunt and Betalist.
My marketing actually doesn’t start until next week!

  8. 2

Especially going into a notoriously quiet time of year! 😉

    1. 2

I know their location but not how they found the product! Definitely on the list to find out though!

      1. 1

October 24, 2019 Published loads of new resources!

Over the past weeks and months, I've been slowly working away on some blog articles and guides - you know, the sort of stuff that's meant to help with SEO but also be invaluable content for my target audience.

I've split it into 2 categories:

  1. On Freelancing and Solopreneurship
  2. On Marketing Strategy and Planning

Having just published, I realised that some of this stuff could be useful for folks here.

It's all completely open too - no forms that push you into an email flow! :)

Let me know what you think!

Freelancing is a big part of my life. But now i'm into startup world more :)
I think this list will be pretty useful for tech community - what do you think about republishing it on Hackernoon?

    1. 2

I hadn’t thought of that... not really been on Hackernoon before. How does it work?

      1. 1

it's a popular website where a lot of tech people hangout - you can sign up and publish a collection of your resources or just a tell cool story about an experience that you have, for example.
I read series from a cool contributor - he explaining problems that Upwork have from a different point of views - very fun to read. can find a link for you

        1. 2

Thanks! I've just submitted one of the articles to Hackernoon so fingers crossed! :)

          1. 1

glad to help - good for karma :)

October 18, 2019 THIS IS IT! To revenue or not to revenue?!

(Biting fingernails as I type!).

After many months of BETA testing, gathering feedback and implementing lots of updates, it's time to relaunch www.immerj.io

Still loads of stuff for free, and I'm introducing a paid tier to see if peeps will pay! Wish me luck!

    Hi Emma,

    Really nice work!

I am going to pick on the "How it works" part because I feel it's the only thing that could improve a lot. The arrow shape is too crowded with text and you don't know which circle to read - at least, that's what happened to me. I think a roadmap or a more simple "flow" would help you simplify this.

I am not sure about the name but your mileage may vary there too. You are clear about who the product is for and what problem does it solves, that's all you can hope for in a landing page!

    1. 1

Thanks Kho! Really good point about that diagram... a workflow would be much simpler and would allow me a bit more text to play with too (although not too much!).

  2. 1

    Very impressive site.
One small nit: It seems that fullscreen is disallowed on your demo video. Given all that was going on, it would have been nice to view it fullscreen with highest resolution.

    1. 1

Great spot Jesseg! I will be sure to update that.

  3. 1

Hey @emmaimmerj Nice product , it's simple and quite easy to understand how to use it. As Kho suggested maybe the how it works sections needs to be re-done.

With regards to your audience, I reckon agencies and companies which have a sizable marketing team will find it very useful to organise their marketing strategies.

    1. 1

Thanks Nakkeeran. Funny you mention the audience as this was what I originally started with and then slightly changed based on Beta feedback! I intend on expanding it out again though once I’ve built a few more features.

  4. 1

    Hey Emma
The app looks great! It looks like a really solid offer to me.
    Best of luck. 👍

    1. 1

      Thanks! Fingers crossed! 😉

September 3, 2019 Now I know what a pivot is! :)

Just announced my first PIVOT to my BETA users and now waiting to see how many of them stick around for what's coming next (biting fingernails...) 😓

For the next few months at least, I'm going to focus www.immerj.io on helping Freelancers and Solopreneurs with their marketing plans.

Better and faster marketing plans = more 💰💰for fellow freelancers!!

Great, what was the main challenge when targeting early-stage startups and small businesses? I think your tool is simple enough (if the user knows a bit about funnel marketing and how it works)

    1. 1

Thanks! Unfortunately small businesses that I tested it with didn’t think it was simple enough. And I also found they weren’t really willing to learn the basics either.
I may incorporate startups back in at some point as they are usually more savvy about funnel marketing and customer journeys. But for now I’m going to focus on freelancers and solopreneurs as I feel they are more clued up and also more in need of what I can provide.

      1. 1

Sounds good. I think producing a 3 min training video about funnel marketing , what it is and how to use it would make things simpler for users who are not familiar or clueless. All the best

        1. 1

Great idea! I'm just in the process of putting together some guides on creating marketing plans, content strategies, etc. That would be a cool one to add to the list - and there are so many great video creation tools now out there so it will be fun too!

          Thanks!

  2. 1

Nice - what did you pivot from exactly? Did the initial focus not end up working like you thought it would?

    1. 1

Hey @johndatserakis! So the original target audience was startups and small businesses, but I was finding that especially the small businesses wanted a tool that was even simpler, probably too simple for it to be valuable.
Plus in the act of pivoting, I've actually uncovered my whole 'mission' - I can connect with this audience much better because I'm a freelancer myself!

August 30, 2019 1st Round of Customer Feedback Done & Pushed Live

Following my BETA launch of www.immerj.io end of June, I've been gathering a ton of great feedback from users - everything from little bugs to what to build next.
Proud to say I've just implemented the 1st round of ideas and successfully pushed everything live yesterday!! :)

August 1, 2019 400 BETA users

Now I'm up to about 400 BETA users (on the free version here: www.immerj.io), I'm now pausing any further marketing or promotion until I've built in a bunch of new features.

I'm planning to relaunch around the start of September with lots of cool new stuff and also my first payment tier.

I'm guessing this will be the true test...! :)

Thanks @anakravitz. Yes, really surfaced some interesting ideas... and also conflicting views! ;)

July 9, 2019 Launched on Product Hunt

Launched the BETA on Product Hunt here (https://www.producthunt.com/posts/immerj) and saw my user base skyrocket from about 150 to 300. Since then, the numbers have been steadily increasing to about 400 now.

The product is still free and I'm not doing any great marketing pushes yet. In fact, I've been more focused on gathering feedback since launch and working out what I need to build next and how I can monetise the product.

June 24, 2019 Launched BETA

With the help of an awesome dev team in the Ukraine, I turned my MVP into a working BETA version - www.immerj.io Both the back-end logic and the front-end interface required a lot of work, hence taking quite a few months to get to this point.

In the process, I also pivoted my target audience to start-ups and small businesses where the need was greater and the barriers to entry were considerably lower.

About

There's so much marketing stuff out there - content, channels... - how does a marketer know where to start or what to do? I'm building immerj to simplify marketing and keep everything a marketer needs in the one place.
