I redesigned the Indie Hackers homepage

I slapped a fresh coat of paint on the Indie Hackers homepage today. Or more specifically, to the "social feed" component, which exists in the middle of the homepage + on group pages + the /newest feed + the /following feed. So all of these other places have gotten a redesign, too.

Social Feed Redesign

Why?

I wanted a cleaner design that would draw more attention to the center of the page, while also being less intimidating to newbies. Reddit-like forums are very natural to developers and internet veterans, but can be a bit overwhelming to others. So I wanted to strike a balance between the text links you see on forums and the friendlier "cards" you see in most social media apps.

I also just think it looks nicer :)

From a functional standpoint, making the feed bolder also allows me to add other items to the sidebar without drawing too much attention away from the posts in the middle.

Some further changes I'm considering adding to the homepage, especially the sidebars:

  • Links to the groups you're a member of, probably sorted to prioritize the groups that have popular new posts first. I recently added a "Trending Groups" section to advertise groups you're not a part of, just because I'd like people to join more groups, which is the main way I conceive of the IH community scaling (i.e. posts being able to get some love even fi they aren't on the homepage).
  • Something highlighting the updates people post to their product pages. There are over 1000 posts/month to people's product pages, but most don't see the light of day, which is tragic. I need to do some brainstorming here. Ideas welcome.
  • A daily poll. I'd like to collect more stats on who IHers are, what we're doing, what we're thinking, etc. A daily poll is an easy way to achieve that. I'd probably make the results public.

well done; UX / UI is so important.

Small changes but that make a real difference. Good work.

On a side note there is no way to give feedback about episodes on podcasts. Would be cool if there was a place here or out to discuss on the episode

I have another feedback, though the retouch on main page looks nice. Not everyday I find myself going to IH web page but if you had a new podcast episode everyday, most probably I would listen it :)

Perhaps if you have the resource a recap of what's going on at IH web page and plus some news would be a nice episode to publish for more frequent podcast episodes. What do you think?

Looks good, it took a few glances to see the differences, though. The posts list on the new design is indeed cleaner looking and easier to read.
