I’m an indie developer with 10 years of experience, and recently I started building my own SaaS products instead of just working on client projects.

One of those projects is IndieAI Directory — a curated AI tools and resources directory for indie developers.

• Why I decided to build it

• What I learned during development

• The challenges I didn’t expect

The Problem I Kept Running Into

Over the past year, AI tools exploded.

Every week there are:

• New AI APIs

• New wrappers

• New “AI startups”

• New tools claiming to replace developers

But as a builder, I kept facing the same problem:

It’s hard to discover useful AI tools quickly.

Most directories are:

• Overcrowded

• Poorly categorized

• Filled with low-quality submissions

• Built for traffic, not for developers

As someone building AI-powered products myself, I wanted a clean, developer-focused AI directory.

So I built one.

Why Build a Directory in 2026?

Let’s be honest.

Directories are not sexy.

They are:

• SEO-driven

• Competitive

• Easy to copy

• Often low-margin

But I saw three opportunities:

1️⃣ AI Is Still Early

The tooling landscape changes weekly. Curation still matters.

2️⃣ Indie Developers Need Focused Resources

Most AI directories target marketers.
I wanted to target:

• Indie hackers

• SaaS builders

• Developers integrating APIs

3️⃣ Directories Are Cash Flow Friendly

If executed well, directories can:

• Generate listing revenue

• Sell featured placements

• Capture SEO traffic

• Build authority in a niche

It’s not a unicorn business.

But it can be a solid foundation.
