Know Exactly Why You Win or Lose
When I started thinking seriously about building a trading analytics platform, every piece of advice pointed me toward the obvious play: build a better TraderSync. Stock traders, US market, established willingness to pay, clean data from brokers.
I went the other direction. I'm building Insyte for retail crypto perpetual futures traders. Here's the reasoning, because I think the niche selection question is more interesting than most people give it credit for.
The crowded path I avoided
The stock trading journal space is mature. TraderSync, Tradervue, Edgewonk, Chartlog, TradesViz — they all do roughly the same thing: import your broker statements, calculate your win rate and P&L, let you tag trades and write notes. They've been iterating on each other for a decade. Pricing is compressed. The feature set is commoditized. And the customer is sophisticated enough to know exactly what they want, which makes differentiation brutal.
Could I build a marginally better one? Probably. Would anyone care? Probably not.
Why crypto perps instead
A few things stacked up:
The market is structurally underserved. Crypto perpetual futures are one of the largest derivatives markets in the world by volume, but nearly every analytics tool treats crypto as an afterthought bolted onto a stock-first product. Perps have their own mechanics — funding rates, liquidation distance, 24/7 sessions, leverage decay — that generic tools don't model properly.
The customer is younger, more online, and more willing to try new tools. Stock traders trust incumbents. Crypto traders churn through tools constantly looking for an edge.
The behavioral problem is more acute. Revenge trading, tilt, overtrading at 3am — these patterns are amplified by 24/7 markets, high leverage, and the dopamine loop of perps. The pain is sharper, which means the willingness to pay for a solution is higher.
Prop firms are exploding in the crypto space. Funded challenges create a customer who is literally being scored on discipline and consistency, not just profit. That's a customer who needs behavioral analytics, not just a P&L dashboard.
Geographic tailwind. Southeast Asia and Turkey are massive retail crypto markets that English-first US tools largely ignore. I'm in Malaysia, which gives me a natural beachhead and localization advantage that a San Francisco competitor can't easily replicate.

This is one of the clearest niche-selection posts I have read, and you buried your sharpest wedge as bullet number four: the prop firm trader. Everything else on your list is a good reason to pick crypto perps, but the funded-challenge customer is the one that changes the whole product. A trader on a prop firm challenge is literally scored on discipline and consistency, not just profit, and can lose a funded account for breaking a rule. That is not someone who "might like a journal." That is someone with an urgent, externally imposed, expensive reason to need behavioral analytics right now.
That customer also reframes what Insyte is. For a normal trader you are an optional mirror, nice to have. For a funded trader you are the thing that keeps them from blowing a five-figure account they paid to earn. Same behavioral engine, completely different stakes and willingness to pay. "Pass your challenge and keep your funded account by fixing the pattern that gets people cut" is a far sharper promise than "analyze your trades," and it is a wedge no stock-first journal can follow you into.
So the go-to-market may be narrower than "crypto perp traders," which is still millions and diffuse. It might be "crypto prop-firm traders trying to pass or keep a challenge," a specific person with money and a deadline, and your Malaysia and Southeast Asia beachhead pairs with it if the regional prop firms are there. Land that wedge, then expand out to the broader perps trader. One question: of your current users, how many are on a funded challenge right now? That number might be your whole strategy.
genuinely sharp. "The pain is sharper, willingness to pay is higher" applied to crypto perps is exactly right — you're not guessing, you're reading the market correctly.
At $5K/mo you've validated the demand. The question now is whether your funnel converts at the rate your product deserves. Crypto traders are skeptical by default — the gap between landing on your page and actually connecting a Bybit or Binance account is where most of your revenue is quietly leaking.
I run conversion audits for founders — find exactly that drop-off. Happy to take a look.
