Invoices Tracker
Free invoicing, time tracking, and estimates for freelancers
Hey IH,
I've been freelancing and one thing always bugged me — paying $25-30/month for tools that basically generate a PDF, email it, and tell me if someone paid. That's it. That's the whole product.
So I built Invoice Tracker as a side project to solve my own problem. It's completely free, no trial, no paywall, no credit card.
## What it does
- Create and send professional invoices and estimates via email
- 5 PDF templates (modern, classic, bold, compact, executive)
- Built-in time tracker that converts tracked hours into invoices
- Recurring invoices on autopilot (weekly, monthly, quarterly)
- Automatic overdue payment reminders
- 35+ currencies with live exchange rates from the European Central Bank
- E-signatures (typed, drawn, or uploaded)
- Watermark documents with your logo
- Client management with full history
## Tech stack
Next.js 15 (App Router), Supabase for auth + Postgres + file storage, Tailwind CSS, Resend for transactional emails, Vercel for hosting. PDFs generated client-side with jsPDF for downloads, server-side for email attachments.
Security: Row-level security on every database table, Content Security Policy headers, magic-byte file validation on uploads, sliding-window rate limiting on all API routes.
## Revenue model
There isn't one yet. I built this to solve my own problem and as a serious portfolio project. If it gets traction, I might add optional premium features later (team accounts, payment integrations), but everything listed above will always be free.
## What I learned building this
- jsPDF is powerful but painful for complex layouts. If I started over, I'd consider react-pdf or Puppeteer.
- Supabase RLS is incredible for security but you have to think about every policy carefully upfront.
- SEO takes months. I've had the site live for a week with 39 indexed pages and only 53 visitors. Community posts like this one are the real short-term growth lever.
- In-memory rate limiting doesn't work well on serverless (no shared state across instances). Redis is the right answer but overkill at my current scale.
## Questions for you
1. If you're a freelancer, does this cover what you need?
2. What's the one feature that would make you switch from your current invoicing tool?
3. Any feedback on the landing page or onboarding flow?
Happy to answer anything about the product, architecture, or build process.
