August 30, 2026 How I Built and Structured a Lightweight Japanese Name Generator for Indie Creators

As a developer and creator, I’ve always been frustrated by how clunky and ad-bloated most utility tools are. When writers, worldbuilders, or indie game developers need character names, they often end up on outdated sites with incorrect Kanji translations, poor layouts, or intrusive popups.

To solve this, I launched Japan Name Generator—a clean, fast, and database-verified utility designed specifically for creative workflows.

Key Design & SEO Insights:

  • Verified Kanji & Meanings: Instead of random letter combiners, every output is paired with accurate Kanji characters, Romaji pronunciations, and contextual English meanings.

  • Intent-Focused Hubs: Creators rarely search for just "random names." Segmenting the platform into targeted category pages—such as dedicated databases for japanese male names and surnames—improved both user retention and search discoverability.

  • Minimalist UI: Built smooth filter controls (gender, Kanji count, thematic tags) without ad clutter to ensure fast loading times and a distraction-free experience.

Currently focusing on expanding the database and refining internal navigation. I’d love to hear feedback from fellow Indie Hackers on UI tweaks or growth strategies for niche utility platforms!
