A curated directory of Jekyll themes for your next project
For the last month or so I've had PayPal enabled as a payment option at checkout on Jekyll Themes – a customer requested to pay using PayPal, so I thought it would be a good opportunity to run a test.
Turns out, lots of people like to use PayPal! It's probably around a 50:50 split so far. I haven't noticed any significant increase in conversions... just people choosing to pay differently.
Long term I'm not sure whether to keep it as an option or not:
- It's more admin for me to split payments across 2 providers
- PayPal is the devil ☠️
- It looks bad on my IndieHackers stats 😂
But at the same time I don't want to turn customers away...
Anyone else tried a similar experiment? What were your findings?
I often get requests for custom work, so I decided to formalize it as an offering!

Just reached a relatively big milestone with Jekyll Themes – 1000 premium themes sold through the site!
It's been a great journey so far, seeing my themes being used by developers all over the world, and helping other theme developers get their themes out there too!
Oops, it's already May! 😱
I missed March's update for Jekyll Themes – but revenue has been increasing slowly and steadily: with $2,992.62 total revenue in March and $3,215.93 in April.
I haven't had time to develop any new themes, but did spend a week refreshing the site's design and adding more content to the site, which seems to be having a good effect on conversions since it launched.
My freelance work has been taking up most of my time this year – which is great! – but I'm looking forward to carving out some time to create more new themes... my list of ideas is getting pretty long!

I was thinking of doing the same thing, but hiring someone to build out themes. There's multiple static site generators out there waiting for some premium themes. Thought a good marketplace would be nice. Problem for me is the initial capital to hire someone to design things out. If you have the time and the skills, I could see this easily growing.

Congrats on the success. How many themes have you built yourself? What's the avg. lifetime revenue per template?
How long does it take you to make a theme?
Do you get affiliate revenue from selling other themes?

I now have 6 themes that I built up there. Not sure on the averages as I launched them all at different times, but the most popular one has done around $4k in sales since July last year.
It took a few months to make the first one as I was creating everything from scratch. But I'm getting faster every time as I can re-use a lot of the basics – I think the most recent one took a week or so.
The site generates (a relatively small amount of) affiliate revenue from ThemeForest themes, and I also have one developer (so far) selling their themes directly on the site too, with a revenue share.

Really liking the site design, and congrats on the growth. How difficult would you rate starting in the theme market? Always wanted to explore it but not sure if it is worth it.

Thanks for checking it out @dgeorgiev! It's a lot of up front work getting started with themes.
I think the key is finding a great distribution channel where customers are already buying – my first ever theme project (WordPress) was a big failure as I was selling independently and the market is huge; but my second (Tumblr) was a smash hit as there was a strong, active marketplace and I got in at the right time.
With Jekyll Themes I'm trying to build that vibrant marketplace for the Jekyll community, and hoping to attract more developers to help me build it up. Drop me a line if you'd like to get involved!

Revenue was down a little from January as expected, but still a strong month at $2,846.99! It was also a record month for affiliate earnings at $249.00 which is interesting.
March should be fun as I finally have some time to work on improving the site... watch this space!

Have you thought about adding access to all themes for a higher price point? I dont know if that would reduce your overall income - would need to check how many people buy more than one theme, but if they only buy one, this could be an easy way to make more money. Say.. $99 for all themes (additional $50 for you). Just a thought... this site looks great!

Absolutely – I do have a 'bundle' available for all the themes I've made myself, but haven't publicised this much. Starting work on V2 of the site next week and hoping to work something like this into the checkout flow. Thanks!

Wow, what a month!
January saw total revenue rise to $3,375.50 – my best month so far by a long shot.
I increased the prices of my original Jekyll Themes from $39 to $49 without a noticeable decrease in conversions, which has really helped to boost profits.
Lots of exciting plans for the next few months, onwards and upwards!
Jekyll theme number six released just in time for the new year!
Personal is the perfect theme for developers, designers and other creatives to create a personal website that shows off their projects, blog posts and details.
As expected, there was a little dip in sales in December – it was the holidays!
Still a strong month though, with a total of $1,929.07 in revenue.
Another solid month of growth for Jekyll Themes with total monthly revenue at $2,152 – again the large majority from direct theme sales: only $99 from affiliate revenue this month.
I think the growth this month was driven by the Product Hunt feature which brought a large amount of traffic to the site; and the Black Friday Bundle which acted as a great up-sell.
I have loads of ideas for new themes but no time to create them right now, but looking forward to welcoming more development partners to sell on the site very soon too.
