August 18, 2020 Product Hunt Launch

Self-hunted JobHuntBuddy on Product Hunt on August 13th. Initial launch time was supposed to be 1AM, but when I woke up at 6AM and saw it didn't post I became worried, turns out it was set to go live at 1PM. 😣 Quickly set to go live immediately and hope for the best. There were already 3 products with over 100 votes...

The rest of the day didn't get much better, we closed the day with 8 upvotes (at least 3 were from friends). Not a great launch, and I felt pretty disheartened. Decided to take the weekend to relax and regroup about what to do next. As I was watching TV on Sunday (3 days later) I got this Twitter notification:

"Job Hunt Buddy was upvoted 100 times. Your parents would be proud 😄"

Not sure how that was possible I jumped online to check. Sure enough there were over 100 upvotes on my post and it was ranked #4 for the day. It was featured.

Still not sure how or why Product Hunt decided to feature us, but it was a really positive turnaround. Lots of new users signed up and the comments were overwhelmingly positive!

July 29, 2020 Added a FREE plan

The first mission of JobHuntBuddy was to help people during the stressful times of looking for a job, especially in our current climate. I got really caught up in the indie-hacker mindset and took a lot of advice as gospel. I didn't want to offer a free plan, but instead a free trial, and then upsell from there.

I've decided to add a free plan to help with traction, and ultimately help job seekers that may not be able to afford a paid service when they're struggling to find an income.

The free plan will allow 10 leads to be stored and 2 documents to be uploaded. Hopefully users will get enough value out of this experience to consider upgrading their plan when their allowances are spent.

July 20, 2020 Sent out beta invites

Finally felt comfortable enough with the product to get some real life users to try it out.

I've had my head in the code and haven't been as vigilant on the marketing side for the past month. Now that I think the MVP is ready it's time to shift my focus back to talking to potential customers.

Here's the beta code: TRY-JHB

May 14, 2020 Launched Landing Page and Socials

Forced myself to close my code editor and set up a landing page to begin collecting emails and get the word out. I set up an email with my domain provider, created my logo and started making accounts on the majors of social media.

I've often invested too much time building my apps, trying to get them done, before even beginning to collect potential customers. Not this time! I'm taking a break from coding and focusing on the marketing side.

About

I've been on the job hunt for a while and one of the toughest parts was keeping track of where in the process I am with each company, thought others might be in the same boat.
