May 26, 2023 Journaleo is live on Product Hunt - we did it!

After (embarrassingly) weeks of procrastination, I woke up yesterday and said no more excuses. I got my **** together and prepped all the things I needed for Product Hunt. I decided I was going to launch today - no matter if it was a bad day, bad time, or there were other things I wanted to build. In reality, those were all excuses and Journaleo is something I'm proud of and want to show the world.

Journaleo is live on Product Hunt today. If you have a second, please support our launch: https://www.producthunt.com/posts/journaleo

If you have a couple more seconds, Journaleo is available on the app store with a special launch price - $4.99 one-time fee. Who doesn't love that! Check it out. I'd love to hear what you think and any of your feedback.

Thank you all!

May 19, 2023 Marketing Week #1: 5 Tactics and How It Went

Thanks to indie hackers across the interwebs, I learned the benefits of alternating between coding and marketing weeks.

I did a lot of different things throughout marketing week #1. Here are the 5 most memorable tactics and how they went.

1. Recurring tasks

In November 2021, I saw a picture of somebody’s marketing week on Twitter. It contained a lot of repeatable tasks that help increase awareness of your product.

I decided to pick a couple and incorporate it into my own marketing weeks. I tweeted about Journaleo 3-5x and participated in relevant forums 3-5x.

Marketing week found on Twitter

The funny thing is I was sort of already doing this for Ahero. Every morning, I spend ~30 minutes browsing through r/productivity. I started doing this to gain domain knowledge of the productivity space so instead of shilling my app, I participated as a normal interested party would. Every now and then, somebody requested exactly what Ahero provides so that was my chance to do my plug. To this day, the long-term benefits of this are incredible:

  • Strong backlinks & SEO.
  • New users find Ahero through old comments every day.
  • Insight into new ideas and pain points.

2. r/SideProject

I posted on r/SideProject and had amazing success. Just kidding. It was terrible. I was honestly scared of posting on Reddit because of how notorious the community is against promotion. But, I went with it and my fear quickly turned into anxiety. I was checking every minute and every hour if anyone commented or upvoted my post.

The outcome… crickets.

3. Updated landing page

I spent some time updating the copy and media assets on the landing page. This tactic was pretty straightforward as I just wanted to reflect the most recent updates.

I also spent some time adding SEO and social preview tags. This is probably only the tip of the SEO iceberg.

4. Posted on Indie Hackers

I posted 2 articles on Indie Hackers. One article was about how I used the 12-week year to create an MVP and the other was actually just a random post in a group called ‘Self Promotion.’

The first article, which I spent about 2 hours writing, didn’t do well because I think it didn’t align with what the community was looking for. The second article, which I spent a max of 10 minutes writing, did surprisingly well.

5. Youtube Shorts

In an effort to try something new, I created a Youtube short. I read online that Youtube is pushing shorts in their algorithm so I created a simple short featuring Arlex’s triathlon training. I mentioned Journaleo in the caption.

My 11-second Youtube Short

I, myself, am not on social media and in fact, use DFTube to ‘de-entertain’ my Youtube. I felt a little behind and lost with all the content and trends out there. I ended up procrastinating and in the end, forced myself to just publish whatever I had.

It’s definitely way too early to see the impact of this tactic. It was good to try something new, but I don’t know if social media content creation is for me. I can’t throw in the towel yet, so I’ll shoot to publish at least 5.

That’s a wrap for marketing week #1. I’m pumped for coding week 😄.

Thanks for reading! See you next time.
If you've read this far, follow me on Twitter! I build in public 😄.

I like the idea of rotating weekly between promoting and coding.
    Is it really hard?
Do you mix them sometimes or maybe you did set a strict rule for not doing that

      It's definitely hard!

I find marketing more difficult b/c it doesn't have specific results/wins right away. On the other hand, with coding, your input/output exchange is immediate.

I have a relatively strict rule, but there are always ways of using coding to do marketing. For example, if you build a free product that spreads awareness about your main product.

May 5, 2023 Journaleo: a visual goal diary for your goals. It's live!

TLDR: Journaleo is live on the app store! If you've been looking for a visual diary for your goals, you've found it!

With Journaleo, you can:

  • Record each day you make progress.
  • Visualize all your hard work in a grid view and timeline view.
  • Add notes to remember special days.
  • Get progress reports and milestones.

The origin

Last summer (2022), I had 2 huge goals: getting my breakouts under control and doing a pull-up. I used the default Notes app to document my skin every week and the default Camera app to document every pull-up attempt.

Using my Notes app and Camera app
What my current approach was like.

Even though it worked, there were a couple of things that didn't make this process delightful:

  • My progress was scattered throughout my camera roll in between food pics, family pics, etc.
  • I found documenting and organizing slow and inconvenient.
  • I couldn't easily see a before after.
  • I'd forget to consistently document and would sometimes lose momentum.

That's when I thought of Journaleo to do this better and faster.

    Hi Allsion,
Great concept you got there. The app purchase button shows its 4.99 payment. And after i signed in it said there is a 7 day trial, so the initial payment button blocks a lot of people even though no one gets charged.

Thanks for trying it out and letting me know! Oh so interesting! I'm running a Product Hunt launch soon so I wanted to combine it with a lifetime purchase. The newest version is in review with the App Store, but I didn't expect for the pricing to go live before the updated code went live ...

Can you let me know exactly what happens?

You try to download it -> it asks for a $4.99 payment -> the app is installed -> you create an account -> it tells you a to do a free trial?

Did the app store charge you? Thanks so much!
