December 28, 2022 2022 Revenue Numbers

In 2022 we switched to using ethicalads.io, which has worked pretty well. The year ended with $75 from ads and some affiliate revenue, as the fill rate overall was fairly low. We've supplemented fill-rate with some fallback ads but our fallback ads have fairly low conversion.

In 2023 we may consider other ad providers, which we have evaluated in the past and would provide more revenue at the expense of user privacy. We value privacy, so we may hold off on a better revenue mechanism.

December 28, 2022 2022 Traffic Numbers

Traffic in 2022 grew by 200% YoY. Surprisingly, most of the traffic to the site is coming from Direct traffic and Bing. In 2019 or so we ran an experiment which Google penalized, and we haven't been able to get back on track with Google ranking. Maybe next year we will be able to figure something out with optimized performance or better SEO content. The direct traffic is probably inaccurate due to privacy tools, this is just a guess though. Yearly total pageviews are 85K, with 60K unique users.

January 1, 2022 2021 Traffic Numbers

Traffic in 2021 grew by 120% YOY. Traffic numbers are accelerating which is awesome. For some reason we were punished by google at some point and google growth started to decreasing while bing and other search engine traffic is increasing dramatically. Currently Google referrals only account for ~10% of traffic which is unusual. Bing and Duck Duck Go account for roughly 80% of traffic. Need to figure out how to get back in Google's good graces :)

December 28, 2020 2020 Traffic Numbers

In 2020 our traffic grew by 106.5% YOY. This is exciting, and we will continue to optimize SEO and ad new features next year.

This increase in traffic allowed us to go from $0/month in revenue to $2/month using Brave ads. We will continue to experiment with ad units and other revenue options next year.

Congrats Ryan! I remember using JSON Checker after finding it through an organic google search. I think it's a great tool and loved the user experience. Thanks for making it!

How did you optimize SEO? It looks like you used React to build the site, which is traditionally not great for SEO out of the box. I am currently developing and beginning to share my own simple React app, and am curious about what steps you took to make it more accessible to search engine crawlers. Here's the site for reference: https://barometricpressure.info/

    Thanks, and Happy New Year!

August 6, 2019 Migrated site to Netlify

Previously, this site was hosted using a combination of GCP Cloud Storage, Cloudflare, and custom deployment scripts for CI.

Since Google Domains does not support CNAME flattening like many other hosting providers, we opted to use Cloudflare to implement redirect rules to emulate CNAME flattening (redirecting www to non-www etc).

Netlify simplified our many things for us, and allowed us to implement some amazing new features like branch previews and a free SSL cert.

The biggest win was: No more custom deployments scripts!

JSON Checker has recently seen some updates to make it easier to use. The updates include auto formatting on paste, and improved text area expansion for large JSON payloads. Additional feedback in welcome!

I really like your JSON Checker web app. Really difficult to figure out that you wrote it. (Or was this who wrote it?)

I was hoping to see that it was a GitHub project, as the Medium article suggests, but no luck there.

It seemed like a solid candidate for a PWA. I was pleasantly surprised that it seems like that is working already.

I wrote the Medium article after finishing the initial version of the project! The project is hosted on GitLab, but is not open source as of right now. I may open source it at some point, but until then I'm happy to answer any questions you may have.
