I built a keyword research tool because Ahrefs was overkill and Google was useless

I was doing SEO for my clients News website- https://groundreport.in/ and every month I was paying $129 for tools I used 20% of.

The problem: I just needed to know — is this keyword worth targeting? What's the real difficulty? What should I write about it?

I checked 100+ keywords with "KD<10" in Ahrefs.

Result: 61 never ranked page 1 even with 45+ DR.

Why? KD only counts backlinks. Ignores:

1. Intent mismatch - You write "what is" but SERP wants "best"

2. SERP features - Top 3 are videos, you wrote blog

3. UGC sites - Reddit/Quora at #1 with 0 links

So I built Keyword Insight Pro.

You enter a topic. It gives you:
1. Keyword Opportunity Score tells you how easy it is to rank for a keyword — based on real SERP competition, search intent, and ranking feasibility. It gives you a clear decision:→ Target it or skip it.

2. Smart Difficulty Score - Gives a more accurate keyword difficulty score than traditional KD. AI scores it by search intent (not just backlink count), SERP gap analysis, competitor keyword intelligence, topic clusters, and blog angles — all in one run. Helps you avoid misleading “easy” keywords.

  1. SERP Weakness Finder - Analyzes top-ranking pages to find gaps and weaknesses. Shows what competitors are missing or doing poorly. Helps you create content that can outrank them.

  2. Content Angle Generator - Generates high-CTR content ideas tailored to the keyword. Focuses on angles that are easier to rank and attract clicks. Removes guesswork from topic selection.

  3. Auto Blog Plan - Creates a complete blog structure in seconds. Includes headings, subtopics, and FAQs. Helps you write SEO-optimized content faster.

Right now it's in beta. Looking for early users who do content marketing or SEO and are tired of the same workflow.

Would love brutal feedback. What's missing? What would make you actually switch?

It is frustrating to spend a fortune on high-end SEO tools only to find that their difficulty scores have almost no correlation with where your content actually ranks.

The real shift in modern search is that ranking is no longer just a numbers game of backlinks but a complex puzzle of matching user intent and finding gaps in how competitors answer a question.

Since your tool identifies SERP weaknesses do you think it will eventually replace manual competitor audits for niche site owners who need to move fast?

You're 100% right and Keyword Insight Pro doesn't replace manual audits - it kills the 80% grunt work so you can do the 20% that matters.

KD scores from most tools are just "how many backlinks do top pages have" — which tells you nothing about whether YOU can rank there.

The real shift is this: difficulty isn't a number, it's a decision. Should I write this or not?

Keyword Insight Pro answers that question by combining two things most tools keep separate — keyword opportunity scoring and SERP reality check. It doesn't just tell you only the difficulty score, it tells you WHY it's difficult or why it's actually easier than it looks.

      Examples:

      1. It Scans top 10 live SERP and tells you: "Hard - but #4 and #7 are weak Quora threads with 0 depth. Beat them by answering 'for beginners' intent".

      2. Is the SERP full of videos when you're writing a blog? Is Reddit sitting at #1 with zero backlinks but pure user trust? Are the top pages answering a completely different intent than what searchers actually want? That's your opening.

And once it finds that opening, it goes further — it suggests the exact content angle to take, so you're not just targeting the keyword, you're targeting the gap the top results left open. Plus it surfaces alternative lower-competition keywords around the same topic, so if the main keyword is too crowded, you have 5 easier entry points ready to go.

You still do the audit - but now you start at #4, not at 1. You know WHERE to look, not IF you should look.

For niche site owners who need to move fast: Yes. It replaces the 2-hour "open 10 tabs, check DA, read articles" part. You get the gap in 3 seconds, then spend your time actually writing the better answer.

That "difficulty is a decision" perspective is exactly what's missing from most SEO workflows because a number without context just leads to wasted content budget. Moving the starting line to the "gap analysis" phase instead of the "data gathering" phase is a massive shortcut for anyone trying to compete with bigger sites.

If the tool can consistently point out those Quora or Reddit openings then you’re essentially automating the most profitable part of a manual audit. By the way I handle digital PR and media placements so I see how much authority plays into this. When you combine high-intent gap analysis with the kind of media reach that builds real trust you can dominate niches very quickly.

Have you thought about adding a feature that alerts users when a previously "Hard" SERP suddenly opens up due to new UGC results popping into the top 10?

You've articulated something we spent a long time thinking about — "difficulty is a decision" only works if the tool is watching the SERP in real time, not just taking a snapshot.

The gap analysis first approach is exactly right. Starting with "where is the SERP weak" instead of "how hard is this keyword" completely changes what you write and why. Bigger sites win on authority — smaller sites win on gaps. That's the entire philosophy behind how we score opportunity.

On the Quora and Reddit opening detection — yes, we flag UGC dominance as part of the opportunity score right now. When Reddit or Quora is sitting at #1 or #2, we surface that as an explicit signal because you're right — that's not a backlink battle, that's a trust and format battle that a well-structured blog post can actually win.

Your feature idea though — SERP change alerts when a previously Hard keyword suddenly opens up due to new UGC results — that is genuinely one of the most valuable things we could build. You'd essentially be getting notified the moment a ranking opportunity appears before anyone else notices. I'm adding this to the roadmap right now.

Given your background in digital PR and media placements, I'd love for you to try the tool and tell me where the authority signals feel incomplete. Free credits link is in bio — your feedback on this specific use case would be incredibly useful.

Glad the roadmap addition resonated with you Abijit. It really is about catching those windows of opportunity before the SERP stabilizes again.

I’m curious if you’ve had a chance to run a few keywords through the tool yet? Since you handle high-authority placements on sites like MSN, AP News, and Bloomberg, I’d love to see how you’d use our 'Gap Analysis' to decide where to point that massive PR power.

When you combine a top-tier media mention with a keyword that already has a 'UGC gap,' the ranking is almost guaranteed. Let me know if the credits worked for you or if you need more to do a deep dive. Would love your take on the authority signals specifically.

            1. 1

Thanks for the credits Abijit! I am actually diving into the tool right now to see how those authority signals stack up.

The gap analysis is already proving useful for my PR workflow especially when deciding which high-authority placements on MSN or Bloomberg will have the most impact on a specific SERP. I will have some detailed feedback for you soon on where we can sharpen those trust signals even further. Really excited about that UGC alert feature on the roadmap!

About

KD <10 ≠ easy. I wasted 200+ hours learning that. KD ignores intent, SERP reality, and real competition. Built KIP: AI scans SERP & gives Smart Difficulty + WHY it's hard + HOW to outrank + Content angles in 1 click.
