May 2, 2026 I rebuilt my SMTP dashboard… and conversions went up

For context: I run KingSMTP.com — a transactional email service (no newsletters, no bulk).

For a long time, the product worked, but it felt like a typical developer tool:

  • scattered UI

  • docs-heavy setup

  • unclear feedback

So I changed one thing: the experience after signup.

Instead of sending users to documentation, I made the dashboard do the work:

→ SMTP credentials visible instantly (copy/paste, no digging)
→ Live email logs at the top (users immediately see “Delivered”)
→ Domain setup with visual SPF / DKIM / MX status (green/red)
→ One-click “Send test email”
→ Everything on a single page (no navigation friction)

The goal was simple:
Get users to their first successful email as fast as possible.

That “aha moment” is everything.

After launching this:

  • Activation rate increased

  • Support questions dropped

  • Paid conversions went up

No new features. Just better clarity.

Big takeaway:
Most dev tools don’t lose users because the product is bad.
They lose users in the first 2 minutes of confusion.

Curious how others approach this:
What’s the fastest way you’ve seen a product get users to value?

Don't compete on price (or free).

White labelling and email deliverability is critical. I pay SendGrid for a dedicated IP etc.

The spam/delivered/junk webhooks are also high on the offering.

You could compete on send speed, web portal speed... lots of things here. Free isn't one of them :)

    1. 1

      Thank you.

  2. 2

Transactional payments would be interesting (no monthly fee).
Otherwise it's yet another mailer service - just a bit cheaper.

    1. 1

Do you mean pay per " number of emails sent" ?

      1. 1

Exactly. No monthly fee, but 1 email costs x cents.
It could be a niche for e.g. bootstrappers that just start out.
Helps to keep the costs down in the beginning and it would allow for an up-sell opportunity when they grow.

        1. 1

I've tried this model before, but in some cases it was very costly for the customer and paying a fixed rate was more affordable.

But thanks for the feedback, will do some digging.

          1. 1

I was more talking about just the lower tier. Hence the up-sell opportunity I mentioned.

    2. 1

Hello, can you explain what you mean?

  3. 1

I checked your landing page, any reason why you can only pay in "dodgy" ways? I wouldn't trust a company with no Credit Cart payments and no company name/address.

    1. 1

      You’re calling Bitcoin dodgy? Okay.

Office address is mentioned on our Privacy page.

Customers can pay with Credit card or PayPal, they need to ask for this option.

The reason they have to ask and it’s not linked anymore on our homepage:

To avoid scammers for abusing our SMTP Service and doing charge backs (or the owners of the stolen credit cards doing chargebacks).

Unfortunately e-mail industry has a lot of spammers and scammers that abuse SMTP service and purchase with stolen cards. To protect our business and our existing customers who have been with us since 2017.

A single charge back can cost between 20 to 50 USD apart from the refunded payment.

To avoid all these drama I had to go this way. Hope you understand.

Customers that paid with Credit card or PayPal, can find the Manage billing link in the footer (which is handled by 2Checkout) and edit their info / subscription.

Thanks for your time and feedback.

        Thanks for the response!

        You’re calling Bitcoin dodgy?

I thought that it is a known fact that crypto are mostly used for trading and illegal transactions (especially in the cases where it's the only payment method accepted, it raises a big question mark). Personally, when I think of someone requesting a BTC payment it's usually for a scam or for completing a transaction without emitting an invoice.

Office address is mentioned on our Privacy page
I checked the Privacy page but I couldn't find any company name (LLC), so this combined with the exotic payment methods made me not consider your service (as a potential customer).

I wish you good luck with your project!
