June 4, 2020 I got my first Sponsor!

I’m really happy to share with you that I got my first sponsor ever!
And I didn't even have to write to anybody because he reached me out on twitter asking if I was willing to add a small ad on the home page and he will pay me a bit more than I was doing with Carbon ads. Of course, my answer was a big YES!

So let's go to the point, he is paying me 60$/month for 3 months to advertise his site Skillr on my home page.

I'm really happy, not only for the money, that I know it's not a lot but is something, but also because someone saw the value of my site and decided to spent his own money to support KnowYourWorth!

Here is the tweet were I made the announcement of the sponsorship in case you want to help me sharing it.
Cheers,

May 22, 2020 10,000 salaries shared in less than 3 months!

A couple of days ago KnowYourWorht reached 10.000 salary submissions! I'm very happy with this milestone!. I never expected to reach that number in just two months and a half.

It has been a long journey, since I launched the site I had added a lot of new features to the site, trying to add value to it and keep the user interested in the site.

First I added support for local currency for more than 80 countries. Then I rebuilt the whole site with Nuxt to improve the SEO and try to get more traffic organically.

Also, I was able to increase by 3x my ads revenues in the site (I post how I did it here.) So the site is free but at least I'm making enough money with the ads to pay the server.

But the key to reaching that number was to constantly keep sharing the site on Reddit, Hacker News, Makerlog and so many other communities.

Most of the salaries were submitted a month ago when I posted on r/InternetIsBeautiful and the post went viral. That day only I got almost 6k submissions.

Some interesting numbers about the salaries shared:
*There are from 108 different countries.
*3600+ companies.
*2500+ different job titles listed.

Now I'm focused on collecting some salaries to make it more useful for people of countries that there are not so many salaries at the moment.

If you have some suggestions/ideas or just want to follow this journey with me, you can find me on twitter

    Nice!
What's the main difference from glassdoor?

    Good luck!

    1. 1

Well, I believe the main difference is simplicity. In KYW you have a table where you can compare easily between salaries. You can order by education, age, gender, company, experience, and more, all on one page.
Also, I give some info about each country so you can make a fair comparison, not just taking in count the salary, but also see how is the cost of living, the quality of life, and some reference prices.
      Thanks for your comment!

March 18, 2020 Launched on Product Hunt

Today I launched KnowYourWorth on Product Hunt!

If you are interested in seeing what other people in your similar situation are earning or you are happy with your salary but you want to support equality any support is appreciated.

I'll share a couple of interesting tools that were really useful to prepare my launch:

  • https://previewhunt.com/ : A tool to preview and prepare your Product Hunt submissions. And also to see what time is in PH. (BTW, Now you can schedule your launch :) )
-https://ezgif.com/maker: a very simple tool to create gifs from images, very useful to create a simple thumbnail.

March 7, 2020 100+ salary submissions in 4 days

Just 4 days after published, knowyourworth has collected more than 100 salaries from 23 different countries reaching 164 salaries at the moment (I previously collected 62 salaries from twitter)

Most of the submissions came from the subreddit r/UsefulWebsites. I also shared it in r/salary but is a small Reddit so it doesn't make a big impact.

Some numbers:

  • 22% of the visitors (102 of 463) actually shared their salary.
  • 0 (none) of them shared their submissions on social networks, which could help to spread the word. Probably I should rethink that feature.

Following days I will be launching it on Product Hunt, let's see how that goes.

    Just giving you my2c.
Given I understand the value proposition,
what is stopping me from giving my numbers is the absence of U&T conditions and privacy policy.

    1. 1

Oh you are right, I have to add some privacy policy conditions. But sincerely asking, what are your concerns? I'm not asking any contact info, like name, email or phone, and some fields are optional like the company name.

March 4, 2020 Finished my MVP

After two weeks of hard working I finished my MVP:
https://knowyourworth.site

I implemented it using Vuejs + Bulma for FE, Nodejs + Expressjs for BE and Mysql as DB.

As usual what it takes me more time is the copyright, as a non-native English speaker, I'm always super insecure about what I write.

I started to spread the word about it in some telegram groups and slack channels. Once I get some feedback I'll do some improvements and fixings. After that I'll launch it on Product Hunt.

February 14, 2020 Decided to build KnowYourWorth

I was scrolling over twitter when I found out #knowyourworth. (https://twitter.com/ZacSweers/status/1228205724255154177?s=20). Someone decided to share his salary as a way to fight against pay inequality and it went viral.

This was like an idea validation for me.
Once I read that when you come up with a good idea for a project write it in your Trello board o whatever note tool do you have. If you find yourself thinking about that idea several times in the future is because probably it worth the shot implementing it
And that was what happened to me. I was thinking of creating it for several months, but always for some reason ( or excuse) found something to do instead.

I did some research and I found there are some useful tools over there but there are most of them for the USA or they just have data from big companies and sometimes they are more complex than we would like. I live and work in Uruguay (South America) so that kind of sources is worthless for me.

So I decided to build my own website trying to implement a more straightforward solution, giving a really simple search tool to compare salaries selecting; gender, location, age brands, experience, level and company.

August 3, 2019 Came up with the idea

I was talking with a friend and she told me that on her company they have a spreadsheet where everyone put anonymously how much they earn, the gender, role, area, years of experience, etc . And I found it pretty interesting.

They do that so everyone can know if they are getting paid fairly compared to others that are in similar situations.

Also, it would be useful if someone wants to know how much it should ask for a new job. Or just to get some statistics, for example to check if woman's and men's are at earning similar

About

Sharing salary has proven to help eliminate existing pay gaps in society. KYW gives an anonymous way for people to openly share their wages avoiding the risks of discussing your salaries at work with coworkers.
