Koji Chambers

Helping people make their own koji at home.

It was late at night and I just finished working on my personal website. After chatting with my good friend Duncan about the pitfalls of the current VC model, he said to check out Indiehackers to see how folks are building something to attain independence and do things their own way.

I liked the idea of the buying the domain and working backwards from there. I know a lot about fermentation and making my own koji (a specific type of mold incubated on rice), and seeing how it's a burgeoning interest area, I figured I could make a simple site to help people get up and running with their own incubation chamber for koji.

I opened Notes, and listed every single part I used to build my own incubation chamber, why I bought them, and nuances/mistakes that come up when incubating koji after you've built it.

I bought the domain, created a github repo to host the site, whipped together a simple html page, and added amazon affiliate links for each part, and shipped it.

I posted the website to reddit's /r/koji and /r/fermentation. It's been 24 hours since I posted it, and I've had over 200 page visits, and have had 7 conversions to purchasing an amazon product, making approximately $0.70. It's not a lot, but I was expecting to make absolutely nothing. I'm super excited that the feedback was very positive, which on a place like reddit can be hard to come by, and that folks were finding it useful and actually buying parts!

I'm not sure what's up next, but I added a mailing list sign up to hopefully start sending key takeaways from interviews i do with industry professionals.

I want to share my knowledge on how to build a fermentation chamber and provide a deeper understanding to the fermentation enthusiast community. Quality is everything.
