April 16, 2026 Show IH: From “productivity tool” to “thinking substitute”: why I built an AI dependency test

I'm a heavy AI user.

When I first started using it, it honestly felt amazing.

Writing, brainstorming, research — I barely had to think. I'd just throw things at AI and get answers in seconds.

At the time, my reaction was simple:this is insanely useful.

But after a while, something felt off.

One day I turned AI off and tried to write something on my own.

And I got stuck.

Not because I couldn't do it —it was a weird kind of friction.

I knew I was capable, but it just didn't flow the same way.

It used to be: think → write.

Now it's more like: think for a second → feels a bit hard → instinctively reach for AI.

AI is supposed to be a tool.

But at some point, it started to feel like I was the one adapting to it.

That didn't sit right with me.

So I started paying closer attention to what was happening.

It's not that I got worse.

It's that my habits changed.

Things I used to do myself :breaking down problems, structuring ideas, pushing thoughts forward, but my first instinct now is:“Let AI give me a starting point.”

And over time, it feels like my brain just——skips that part.

Like I've slowly outsourced a piece of my thinking.

It reminds me of something simple:when you stop doing something for long enough, you get rusty.

Like a race car driver —if they don't drive for a long time, they don't just stay at the same level.

At some point I felt like I should do something about it.

That's basically where LEAPWIT.COM came from.

At first it wasn't even meant to be a product.

I just wanted to answer one question for myself:how dependent am I on AI, really?

It later evolved into three parts:

* how much you rely on AI

* your cognitive ability

* your ability to generate new ideas without AI

From that, it calculates something I call an Autonomous Competence Index (ACI),

and gives you a personalized training plan based on your results.

I don't think AI is the problem.

But I do think in an AI-driven world,it matters more than ever to stay mentally engaged —instead of letting AI slowly replace how we think.

Have you also felt like AI is quietly outsourcing your thinking?

I'd love to hear your experiences in the comments.

And if you're curious, feel free to try the test at LEAPWIT.COM and let me know what you think — your feedback would mean a lot!
