February 12, 2022 Reached $2158 in sales in my first month

By the end of January, ~330 students had signed up & I made $2158 from the course!

Definitely didn't expect it to go so well, especially given it's the firs thing ever I launch online.

I'm also constantly getting good reviews on Udemy which signals to me that the course is of very good quality & I'll definitely look to capitalise on it in the future, extend it with more content, raise prices, etc.

January 2022 Launched the course

Finally published my course & started marketing it.

I started from my inner circle of friends first to get some positive reviews, then my professional network on linkedin and finally, went & published the course on reddit, hackernews, etc.

It went better than I expected and more than 200 students signed up in the first week!

December 23, 2021 Finished Production \w lots of delay

I spent the next three months recording the lectures & creating exercises. Afterwards, about three months more in video editing via an editor I hired & one month more to design the course poster.

In retrospect, I could have launched much sooner if I had parallelised much of those efforts. Next time I do something like that, I will involve the video editor from the get-go and get the poster designed upfront.

March 16, 2021 Took a wrong turn

Initially, it was unclear to me whether I should build my own platform or use an existing one.

At first, I decided to create my own platform so I started learning ReactJS to build it. That was fun and I learnt the tech but I quickly realised that the scope will be massive if I decide to go that route.

In addition to that, I didn't really have my own audience yet so I decided to use Udemy which nicely offers to market your course for you in exchange for a larger commission.

January 1, 2021 Came up with the idea!

Part of my 2021 new year's resolution was launching my first online product. The thing I was best at was programming and teaching.

I thought I'd start out with the latter because it's easier to launch & find paying customers and also, I was already quite proficient in it since teaching onsite for various bootcamps since 2015.
