December 17, 2020 $100 MRR after a solid launch month

We launched leerly almost exactly a month ago, and we haven't seen any sort of overnight success (no surprise there), but we have steadily climbed to over $100 MRR (130, as of the moment I'm writing this). I am so, so excited about this, obviously, but it mostly makes me pumped to keep working on the platform, and talk more to customers so we can keep building and marketing.

@Ulrik has been taking the lead on our marketing efforts while I program everything, so that MRR is all thanks to his outreach. He has been focusing on helping Spanish learners in various Facebook groups find good resources, and answering questions when possible, and I've been sharing our weekly free leerly article on the Spanish learning subreddits (with permission, of course!)

Here's to $600 MRR next, when we can finally stop paying our native translators out of pocket haha.

November 20, 2020 First Paying Customer

On the first day of our soft launch we were able to secure our first paying customer! We haven't even really tapped into marketing yet, beyond some basic friends and family posts, though this customer was neither.

We've also noticed that we have ~10 users signed up since launching yesterday, but they dropped off before completing the billing process. We want to monitor this for a couple days and see how common it is, as it might reflect an issue. Maybe they get to the billing page and are surprised at the price?

Fortunately, we can follow up with them, and maybe get some feedback, and/or offer a discount.

Congrats, we've got our first paying customer months after I added payments (which I did long after our soft launch).

We're a startup that helps people learning languages through listening, just like you do through reading, so we have something in common. We've been covering only Lithuanian so far, but plan to move to bigger markets soon.

Oh that sounds awesome! I'm gonna check it out right now. We've been thinking about adding audio support for all of our articles sooner rather than later, since reading AND listening is such an effective combo.

November 19, 2020 Today, leerly is soft launching

Today we are opening up leerly to the very first potential customers! We want to do a smaller pre-launch to smoke test the code, and ensure everything is working as expected, but we are officially accepting customers and taking payments.

We have a larger list of ~150 interested folks who signed up to be notified of our launch, but we won't start messaging them until this weekend at the earliest, I reckon. This will also mark the start of our launch advertising, which we have been doing some prep for. Fortunately, @Ulrik has a marketing connect who helped us develop a beginner marketing strategy that we can use to hopefully pull in our first couple customers. I guess we've arrived to the point where we can start going after that.

Anyway, we have a lot we are excited to build and introduce to the platform, so we will definitely have more updates coming!

November 11, 2020 100 Mailing List Signups

After launching the landing page for leerly a couple weeks ago, we hit 100 emails in our beta mailing list! This is very exciting for us, as we are preparing to launch in about a week and will have over 100 folks to email about the launch who have already shown interest.

To call this a mailing list is a little bit incorrect, as we are only collecting emails for folks who want to be informed about the leerly launch. Either way, I didn't expect us to hit triple digits, and it's largely thanks to the marketing efforts of @Ulrik who was running some FB ads to spread the word.

We are excited to see how the platform grows! Thanks to everyone whose signed up and supported us thus far!

October 28, 2020 Launched the pre-launch landing page

Today we launched the first, simple version of our landing page, which we want to use to collect emails while we finish building the application. Since we need to pay translators, and need to do that from our own pockets, we wanted to try to have as many potential customers lined up before we start paying the employees, so we can reach profitability as fast as possible (hopefully).

We will see, however! Now it's time to get more feedback on the page and make whatever tweaks we'll inevitably need.
