Offline, private, simple photo management

October 24, 2025 "If you do nothing, you can scale infinitely!" I remembered this quote fondly as I did some perf engineering on LiveGalleryApp.com today :)

In trying to get ready for release, I found lots of little gremlins, born out of the way any project grows organically. As part of refactoring, I managed to find several noticeable speedups and quality improvements :)

This is one of the areas where AI shines, let it critique your code base and build you a prioritised list (ideally markdown) of things to fix. Then you iterate with it on the list :)

October 16, 2025 A busy day for livegalleryapp.com

A busy day for livegalleryapp.com Needed up spin off database management to a separate process so I can get front end deployed properly (AOT fun)

On the plus side, it exposed lots of minor niggles, which are now mostly fixed. Hoping to get a working build to beta testers very soon

October 12, 2025 Deploy Debugging

First time I've ever had to try and attach to a running exe to find out why it was failing, but it worked! turns out a load of resources weren't being included in package when deployed - getting that much closer :)

October 1, 2025 Massive Speed Boost!

Made a huge breakthrough in Live Gallery App’s image ingestion! 🚀

The initial stage of ingesting 6,000 images used to take 3 minutes.
Thanks to recent optimizations, it now completes in just 7.9 seconds.

That’s a 22x speedup—over 95% faster! 🎉

This is only stage 1: thumbnail generation and metadata extraction are handled separately. Still testing before full rollout, but this is a big step forward.

The original phrasing was a bit off — the process now takes 95% less time, which means it’s about 2,178% faster overall! That’s a huge 22x speed boost! 🚀

Exactly how many people complained about the long wait?

Precisely zero! I'm aware of the adage 'Premature optimisation is the root of all evil'. This came up as a by-product of other work I'm doing

September 30, 2025 Getting close to beta!

Nothing focuses the mind like announcing you're nearly ready for beta. I’ve been blown away by the strong response from people eager to test the app. Now it’s time to make good on that promise! Along the way, I’ve discovered many small fixes beyond just working on my machine. Thanks to this community for the overwhelming support. More updates coming soon.

About

Live Gallery App exists because there is a clear lack of simple, effective offline photo management tools for modern Windows operating systems since the discontinuation of Picasa and Windows Live Photo Gallery.
