I started not being shy to share the project about 3 months ago. Back then, the app only had ~20 users, mostly devs, test accounts, and close friends.
The biggest push came over a single week in May, where I made an explicit goal to get as much feedback as I could and I employed a multitude of channels (mostly ads and Reddit) to promote the app. In fact, I received so much feedback that week that I'm still working through the backlog.
The next big step is increasing retention and building the community. Onto the next week!
About
I got tired of shallow mechanics and the lack of APIs in gamification apps. I'm building my own around this core principle: anything (fitness, finance, productivity trackers) should be able to connect to it

Is it just an app or do you have also created a backend?
It's both :)

I like that number, haha! π€
That's awesome! Congrats. Keep going! I've checked your site. Looks very clean, but I spent some time to get the idea of what your website all about.
Thanks for your feedback! Yeah, explaining the idea is a constant struggle.
If you still remember, what were the "I think the app is X" that turned out to be incorrect, and "oh, it's actually Y" when you were reading the landing page?
1st impression was that it's a site of some game or game forum :) Probably because first of all, I've read the text in bold and only then smaller texts.
What you do do for the sign ups? Ask for reviews on a certain Reddit channel, share an article, comments?
I used to post on reddit, HN, PH, run ads, spread the word in slack/telegram channels. Recently though I haven't been that active. Mostly word of mouth, and an occasional reddit post.
