April 15, 2026 Intro: Luna Marine Charts

I've been a software engineer for years and also love sailing. I started working on a chart viewer and navigation app about a year ago and it is coming along nicely. I'm building the app in Tauri, which has some rough spots but overall has been a great experience.

The app has been in the App Store (available only on MacOS at the moment) for a couple of weeks: https://apps.apple.com/us/app/luna-marine-charts/id6760975477

Building a navigation tool in Tauri is a solid move, but you’ve entered a niche where 'Reliability' is literally a matter of life and death. Sailing enthusiasts are notoriously picky and only trust names that have been vetted by the community and the industry.

Here’s the reality: If Luna Marine Charts isn't being featured or discussed in major maritime news or top-tier tech publications, most sailors will just see it as a 'hobbyist project' rather than a serious navigation tool. In the marine world, if you don't have that high-level media validation, building enough trust to get people to actually use your app on open water is going to be an uphill battle.

Have you thought about how you're going to bridge that trust gap? Because without being cited by reputable media, it’s almost impossible to compete with the established legacy brands in the sailing space.

I'm focused on organic growth and word of mouth initially.

Fair point. Organic growth is definitely the most sustainable way to build a loyal user base.

However, since you're using Tauri (which is great for performance), you’re in a position to challenge some of the clunky legacy apps. The challenge with 'word of mouth' in navigation is that sailors usually recommend what they already trust with their lives.

Quick question: Are you planning to stay Mac-only for a while, or is the cross-platform potential of Tauri something you're looking to leverage soon to speed up that organic reach?

I'm internally testing builds for Windows, Android, and iOS but haven't determined timing for releasing on those platforms yet.

Smart to keep it in internal testing until it’s bulletproof. Moving from Mac-only to Windows and Mobile is a huge jump, and that’s usually the point where 'Brand Authority' becomes a massive growth lever.

When you do decide to go live on all platforms, having that cross-platform reliability backed by some high-authority tech or maritime mentions will help you scale way faster than word-of-mouth alone.

Good luck with the testing—Tauri is a beast for performance! I’ll leave my Digital PR Portfolio here in case you ever want to discuss scaling that trust later.
