Makerkit - Month 4: I'm ramen profitable!

December has been great ๐ŸŽ‰ After four months, Makerkit is making enough to support my lifestyle!

Here are this month's stats:

๐Ÿ’ต $3,489.75 in sales (+120%)
๐Ÿ“Š 4k users and 10k page views to the website (+100%)
๐Ÿ’ฌ Over 120 users in the Discord community

This puts me just above ramen profitability. I am not a big spender, but Italy isn't famous for being a tax-friendly country ๐Ÿ˜‚

All I can say is that this wildly exceeded all my expectations for a side project, and I'm super excited to ship more kits and content in 2023.

Happy new year, people!

That's amazing! Congrats. What were your biggest distribution channels? And how long have you been working on this?

    1. 1

Most customer arrive organically from Google. I have worked on it on and off for one year, sit on it for many months and I only launched at the end of August though

  2. 2

Awesome site man, very nice work too! May I ask how you made the animated images in the SAAS features section? I'd like to add a similar thing to my sites landing page?

    1. 1

Thanks! I've used Screenflow, but also check out Screen Studio, it's phenomenal.

  3. 2

That's really awesome! Congrats big time!

  4. 2

    Congratulations ๐ŸŽ‰

  5. 2

    Congrats. Inspiring :-)

  6. 2

    Congrats!!

  7. 2

    What an epic milestone!!!

  8. 2

Great to hear! You reached a point that many people dream of!

  9. 2

Amazing! This is great achievement, and I am sure you are on the right path to 10X it.
    Good Luck :)

    1. 1

      Thank you so much ๐Ÿ˜ƒ

  10. 2

Congrats! You are doing it great!

  11. 2

    Congratulations ๐ŸŽ‰

    Great job! love this

Your blogs and documentation are very well done. I can tell you've put a lot of effort into them. Are you getting a lot of traffic from SEO?

  14. 1

Nice landing page! I'm curious, with the 14-day refund policy, do you get a lot of refund requests? And aren't you tempted to charge "per template" instead of life-long access to everything?

    1. 2

I've had a few (2) out of over 80 customers, so not too bad so far. I'm trying to be as transparent as possible about what the product is/does.

Initially, that was the idea - but ultimately, people will choose and stick with one only, so I think the missed opportunity isn't too big; on the other hand, I suppose the ability to try and choose the most suitable among the technologies makes the overall offer stronger.

I'll raise prices when new kits drop; I think there's still some room there as it's still one of the cheapest kits.

      1. 1

Makes sense. Good luck to you!

  15. 1

C'รจ la possibilitร  anche di una versione Nuxt? :)

    1. 1

      Grazie!

In futuro magari si, ma non prestissimo ๐Ÿ˜ฌ

  16. 1

    Congratulazioni

  17. 1

    Congratulations!

You said that "Italy isn't famous for being a tax-friendly country ๐Ÿ˜‚" , have you considered moving your business to a different country now that it's becoming more profitable? If so, where? ๐Ÿ˜„

    1. 1

      Hi, thanks!

I'm taxed where I reside, and for the time being, I can only technically reside in Italy. I will be leaving eventually, but not for tax reasons ๐Ÿ˜…

      1. 1

        Awesome, thanks for clarifying! ๐Ÿ˜„

  18. 1

Congratulations, so happy for you! How did you decide on your pricing model, given the tradeoff between recurring revenue and one-off purchases?

    1. 2

      Hi!
In terms of pricing, I thought that would be an amount I'd be comfortable spending, and it is slightly cheaper than more established kits with more social proof. I did not think a higher price would have benefitted me in the beginning. I just raised prices in January tho.

I tried subscriptions for $19 a month, but most would take the codebase and unsubscribe. It doesn't work well without a way to enforce it, and I haven't found a way to enforce it that I'd be happy with.

  19. 1

I did not know makerkit, really interesting and useful idea.

    Complimenti!

  20. 1

I think one of the key things is that you can do multiple sites with the kit. Many of these types of templates limit you to a fee for one site only, unless I got that wrong. That is an instant put off for me, since I want to create many little saas products in 2023. This at least tempts me into a purchase for something that I was not previously considering.

Nice way to fill a hole in the market.

    1. 1

Thanks! To me, it doesn't make sense to restrict since it's tough to enforce and only ends up ruining the conversion rate. And generally speaking, I don't want to chase people, reminding them they can build one app ๐Ÿคฃ

That's why it's perfect for small bets

      1. 1

My personal opinion is that you should give higher priority in your marketing to pointing out that the license covers unlimited sites.

        In any case, nice work!

        1. 1

Thanks for the feedback; I'll tweak the copy to make that more prominent!

          1. 1

If you want any tips for your landing page conversion rate, hit me up on [email protected]. I used to be a full time internet marketer for many years. Happy to give you a couple of ideas if you want.

  21. 1

I think in general kits will have a lot of good response. Congratulations and good luck ๐Ÿ‘

  22. 1

    Congrats @gc!

    It looks neat!!!

  23. 1

Congrats! Awesome kit! Do you do it part-time or full-time? I'm planning to get into business next to my full-time job and baby. It won't be easy, but people like you inspire me every day. Thanks for sharing!

    1. 1

I do indie-hacking full-time along with other projects (1 of which is profitable); Makerkit is only part-time for 2-3 hours a day (with most of it on support these days).

I hope you can launch your idea soon! ๐Ÿš€

    2. 1

@ThePianist if you are a dev looking for a partner, take a look!

And even if you are not, would love a push for the algo!

  24. 1

Great! How did you come up with that idea though? I am also trying to start a side project.

    1. 1

Hi! the idea isn't original; there are many others out there ๐Ÿ˜… But it's something I needed and built for myself, so I thought it would be helpful to other people too.

  25. 1

Wow! Thanks for sharing this inspiring story! If you don't mind, how long was your beta test before you think you're ready to launch? and what content did you focus on for gaining traction?

    1. 2

I offered it for free to testers for a period of 2 months, got feedback, then launched it at the end of August.

I focused on content that would be helpful when launching a SaaS. You can check out my blog to see the content I posted ๐Ÿ˜ƒ

      1. 1

Congrats! ๐Ÿฅณ๐ŸŽ‰ Iโ€™m guessing the free testers were early adaptors on indie hackers? Getting constructive feedback is very beneficial when it comes to prioritizing.

        1. 1

They all came from Google I think, I launched on IH when I opened up sales :) It probably should have launched here much earlier ๐Ÿ˜…

But yes, it was very valuable, never regretted giving away for free since the feedback is what helped me getting the required confidence to start charging for it.

  26. 1

    Goble Goble,

    Very good

  27. 1

    Congrats!
Giancarlo Buomprisco. That's so awesome to hear!

  28. 1

Wow~ this is a great project!
Why am I running into it so late? I spent a lot of time building Tapicker's official website. So far it hasn't satisfied me.

In the beginning, I wrote the documentation using an open source documentation system and deployed it on a subdomain. Until recently, I migrated it to the official site to make it look like a whole.

I don't want to spend enough time doing pointless things. I need to focus on my app not official website building. But I couldn't find a good solution before here.

If creating the next SaaS, I want to try Makerkit.

  29. 1

    Very well done!
Also, the UI is fantastic ๐Ÿคฉ, did you use a particular framework?

    1. 3

      Thank you! ๐Ÿ˜ฌ๐Ÿ˜„

The UI uses Tailwind CSS and Headless UI.

  30. 1

Congrats! That's so awesome to hear!

    1. 1

      Thanks, appreciate it!

  31. 1

Congrats! What channels did you use to drive sales?

    1. 2

      Thanks!

Only Google, I'd say. I focused a lot on content and waited for it to pick up, which required around 8-10 months from the first post.

      1. 1

Thanks! Any particular resources or services you used to get the most reach/best SEO? Apart from writing (what looks to be) very useful articles.

        1. 2

Initially, I used the free Google Ads tools to search for keywords; then, I switched to Keysearch and the free version of Semrush.

Truthfully, though, I am an SEO newbie, so no growth hacks/magic sauce whatsoever. Just lots and lots of hours spent writing ๐Ÿ˜…

          1. 1

            Alright, thanks! ๐Ÿ™๐Ÿป

  32. 1

    Well done! Enjoy it!

  33. 1

congratulations ! do you have integration with cloudflare functions?

    1. 1

      Hi, thanks!

No, but I suppose you could deploy Remix/Supabase to Cloudflare.

  34. 1

Man, to think that I thought 'ramen profitable' meant that you made enough profit where you could buy a bowl of ramen. Oof.

    Congratulations! That's a great accomplishment.

    1. 2

      Haha! Thank you! ๐Ÿ˜ƒ

Compared to my previous solo ventures, making enough to buy ramen would still be a success! ๐Ÿคฃ

  35. 1

This is amazing! Super happy for you. Well done in putting it all together so well. I'll def. use it in my next project ;)

I also have some ideas for lead generation. Let me know if you like to discuss them.

Good luck! 2023 would be amazing ๐Ÿš€

    1. 1

      Hi, thank you!

Sure, I'd love to discuss that!
