Makerkit
Full-Stack React SaaS Starter kits
After a few weeks of work - I finally released a course to build an AI SaaS with two of the hottest technologies, Next.js App Router and Supabase.
The course teaches how to build an AI SaaS from scratch, from authentication to shipping the code to production.
Here's the outline of the course:
- Introduction: A quick introduction to Next.js 13
- Next.js App Router: Understanding the new Next.js App Router
- Project Setup: Creating and setting up a Next.js App Router project and Supabase
- Authentication: Building a complete authentication flow with Next.js Supabase
- Database: Setting up a database schema with Supabase
- ChatGPT API: Generating posts with OpenAI's ChatGPT and writing them to the DB
- CRUD Operations: Displaying, updating and deleting data using Next.js Server Actions and Supabase
- Payments: Accept payments using Stripe Checkout and Stripe Billing Portal
- Permissions and Thresholds: Limiting access based on the user's subscription plan and recording usage
- Going to Production: Deploying to Vercel and Supabase and using Next.js App Router in production
It supports PPP - so you'll find a discount at the top of the page if eligible!
Grab a copy! https://makerkit.dev/courses/nextjs-app-router
I skipped the January update! So let me catch you up on what I've been up to.
Makerkit has made much progress with design improvements, new features, and a fantastic community.
- The Remix + Supabase is out of beta β¨
- I've just released the Next.js RSC + Supabase as an experimental kit to a few customers! π₯
π΅ With $8606 in revenue, February has been the best month yet! (+ 27%)
π The other super exciting stat is that the website gets over 10,000 clicks per month from Google, which is a massive milestone for me.
I've been very focused on content since day 1 and seeing the strategy and all its efforts pay off is pretty exciting!
π¬ 290 users in the Discord community!
My current goal is to ship the new Next.js + Supabse kit and reach feature parity with the original Starter kit (Blog, Docs, and MFA). And, of course, keep writing lots of content!
Thank you for reading, ciao!
Giancarlo Buomprisco
December has been great π After four months, Makerkit is making enough to support my lifestyle!
Here are this month's stats:
π΅ $3,489.75 in sales (+120%)
π 4k users and 10k page views to the website (+100%)
π¬ Over 120 users in the Discord community
This puts me just above ramen profitability. I am not a big spender, but Italy isn't famous for being a tax-friendly country π
All I can say is that this wildly exceeded all my expectations for a side project, and I'm super excited to ship more kits and content in 2023.
Happy new year, people!

That's amazing! Congrats. What were your biggest distribution channels? And how long have you been working on this?
-
1
Most customer arrive organically from Google. I have worked on it on and off for one year, sit on it for many months and I only launched at the end of August though
-

Awesome site man, very nice work too! May I ask how you made the animated images in the SAAS features section? I'd like to add a similar thing to my sites landing page?

Thanks! I've used Screenflow, but also check out Screen Studio, it's phenomenal.

Your blogs and documentation are very well done. I can tell you've put a lot of effort into them. Are you getting a lot of traffic from SEO?
-
1
Nice landing page! I'm curious, with the 14-day refund policy, do you get a lot of refund requests? And aren't you tempted to charge "per template" instead of life-long access to everything?
-
2
I've had a few (2) out of over 80 customers, so not too bad so far. I'm trying to be as transparent as possible about what the product is/does.
Initially, that was the idea - but ultimately, people will choose and stick with one only, so I think the missed opportunity isn't too big; on the other hand, I suppose the ability to try and choose the most suitable among the technologies makes the overall offer stronger.
I'll raise prices when new kits drop; I think there's still some room there as it's still one of the cheapest kits.
-

Makes sense. Good luck to you!

Congratulations!
You said that "Italy isn't famous for being a tax-friendly country π" , have you considered moving your business to a different country now that it's becoming more profitable? If so, where? π
-
1
Congratulations, so happy for you! How did you decide on your pricing model, given the tradeoff between recurring revenue and one-off purchases?
-
2
Hi!
In terms of pricing, I thought that would be an amount I'd be comfortable spending, and it is slightly cheaper than more established kits with more social proof. I did not think a higher price would have benefitted me in the beginning. I just raised prices in January tho.I tried subscriptions for $19 a month, but most would take the codebase and unsubscribe. It doesn't work well without a way to enforce it, and I haven't found a way to enforce it that I'd be happy with.
-
-
1
I did not know makerkit, really interesting and useful idea.
Complimenti!
-
1
Congrats!!
-
1
I think one of the key things is that you can do multiple sites with the kit. Many of these types of templates limit you to a fee for one site only, unless I got that wrong. That is an instant put off for me, since I want to create many little saas products in 2023. This at least tempts me into a purchase for something that I was not previously considering.
Nice way to fill a hole in the market.
-
1
Thanks! To me, it doesn't make sense to restrict since it's tough to enforce and only ends up ruining the conversion rate. And generally speaking, I don't want to chase people, reminding them they can build one app π€£
That's why it's perfect for small bets
-
1
My personal opinion is that you should give higher priority in your marketing to pointing out that the license covers unlimited sites.
In any case, nice work!
-
1
Thanks for the feedback; I'll tweak the copy to make that more prominent!

Congrats! Awesome kit! Do you do it part-time or full-time? I'm planning to get into business next to my full-time job and baby. It won't be easy, but people like you inspire me every day. Thanks for sharing!
-
1
I do indie-hacking full-time along with other projects (1 of which is profitable); Makerkit is only part-time for 2-3 hours a day (with most of it on support these days).
I hope you can launch your idea soon! π
-

@ThePianist if you are a dev looking for a partner, take a look!
And even if you are not, would love a push for the algo!

1
Great! How did you come up with that idea though? I am also trying to start a side project.
-
1
Hi! the idea isn't original; there are many others out there π But it's something I needed and built for myself, so I thought it would be helpful to other people too.
-
-
1
Wow! Thanks for sharing this inspiring story! If you don't mind, how long was your beta test before you think you're ready to launch? and what content did you focus on for gaining traction?
-
2
I offered it for free to testers for a period of 2 months, got feedback, then launched it at the end of August.
I focused on content that would be helpful when launching a SaaS. You can check out my blog to see the content I posted π
-
1
Congrats! π₯³π Iβm guessing the free testers were early adaptors on indie hackers? Getting constructive feedback is very beneficial when it comes to prioritizing.
-
1
They all came from Google I think, I launched on IH when I opened up sales :) It probably should have launched here much earlier π
But yes, it was very valuable, never regretted giving away for free since the feedback is what helped me getting the required confidence to start charging for it.

Wow~ this is a great project!
Why am I running into it so late? I spent a lot of time building Tapicker's official website. So far it hasn't satisfied me.In the beginning, I wrote the documentation using an open source documentation system and deployed it on a subdomain. Until recently, I migrated it to the official site to make it look like a whole.
I don't want to spend enough time doing pointless things. I need to focus on my app not official website building. But I couldn't find a good solution before here.
If creating the next SaaS, I want to try Makerkit.
-
1
Very well done!
Also, the UI is fantastic π€©, did you use a particular framework?-

Thank you! π¬π
The UI uses Tailwind CSS and Headless UI.

congratulations ! do you have integration with cloudflare functions?
-
1
Hi, thanks!
No, but I suppose you could deploy Remix/Supabase to Cloudflare.
-
-
1
Man, to think that I thought 'ramen profitable' meant that you made enough profit where you could buy a bowl of ramen. Oof.
Congratulations! That's a great accomplishment.
-
2
Haha! Thank you! π
Compared to my previous solo ventures, making enough to buy ramen would still be a success! π€£
-
-

This is amazing! Super happy for you. Well done in putting it all together so well. I'll def. use it in my next project ;)
I also have some ideas for lead generation. Let me know if you like to discuss them.
Good luck! 2023 would be amazing π
-
1
Hi, thank you!
Sure, I'd love to discuss that!
-
Wrote a small post about my plans for the coming year, and a short retrospective on 2022.
I launched Makerkit rather late, but it already reached ramen profitability. I couldn't be happier, since it's exceeded all my expectations π
Here are my plans for 2023 to grow Makerkit:
- Launch the Supabase versions of the Next.js and Remix kits
- Build and launch a React Native kit
- Maybe an eCommerce template with Remix/Hydrogen
- A template for building Shopify apps
- I'm planning on adding a lot more content and documentation. Content is a big part of the overall value, and my main marketing channel.
- I'd also love to launch one or more courses. Seems like a natural way to complement the current offering.
What about you? What are your plans for 2023?

November has been the best month yet for Makerkit!
β
Sold 16 licenses, totaling $1,584 in sales
β
Had 1.9k visitors (+105%) and 5.6k page views (+86.9%)
β
I removed Github Sponsors and the monthly plans
β
I released the Remix Firebase kit (1 sale). I think this will improve next year as Remix becomes more popular.
β
I redesigned the website since Makerkit is now a collection of kits (and not just Next.js + Firebase). I got good feedback on it, but I think SEO is slightly diving due to the changes.
β
Will release the new Supabase version of the kits (one within this year) and start the transition to the new Next.js RSC as soon as it becomes ready for production
Thanks for reading,
Ciao!

After 2 weeks of work, I finally released the Remix + Firebase SaaS Starter! π₯³
The functionalities are virtually the same as the original Next.js kit, without the blog and documentation generators, since I haven't seen much interest in these functionalities from the existing customers. I may add it in the future: I think every SaaS should have these.
Since the website wasn't set up for multiple kits (both in terms of copy and structure), I put a lot of effort into updating the design/messaging/documentation.
β
Added a landing page to each kit
β
Removed Github Sponsors; no one was using it, does handle VAT, does not handle refunds
β
Updated primary heading to "React SaaS Starter" instead of "Next.js SaaS Starter." I may update in the future since I can see more technologies I'd like to add.
β
Added multiple documentation. The existing ones point to the new URL using a canonical link. I hope that works out well in terms of SEO since a lot of content is duplicated.
β
I Bought Screenflow, and now I can make cool videos π€£
I plan to raise prices from $99 to $149 after Black Friday. More customers = more support, and it takes some time.
Next, I'm planning on adding the Supabase version of the kits. The goal is to do it by Christmas.
Hope I can do it π€
Ciao!

I wanted to try upgrading the Next.js Kit to the new Layouts/RSC, but it's so far from ready: I've decided to wait until it's more stable and complete.
Given the hype from the Shopify acquisition (and some customers enquiring), I've started working on a SaaS Starter kit with Remix and Firebase, a migration from the original kit based on Next.js.
I have doubts about how to restructure the website with multiple kits, so there's some work to do on that front:
- How does my SEO strategy change using multiple kits?
- What should the landing page feature?
- How to handle the documentation for multiple kits?
- How to update my tagline?
Now, on to the technicalities.
I've really enjoyed using Remix! It's fast, DX is excellent, and it just clicked quickly. Additionally, the conversion has been seamless: because most HTTP requests are performed client-side using Firestore, the kit only has a few HTTP calls that require API routes.
The UX/UI and overall functionalities will be the same as the original kit, but I'll skip the blog/documentation generator at the beginning since they can easily be added later.
I've added a page to collect early sign-ups and gain some SEO juice while I finish the kit. I reckon it's 80% there. I will launch it sometime next week, with beta testing starting this week.

October has been a rollercoaster.
π₯³ Makerkit finished the month with 15 sales, which amount to $1188 one-off payments, plus two recurring subscriptions at $19, one of which has been canceled.
But it started badly: no sales for the first two weeks! π¬
Many were making it to the checkout step, but something prevented them from purchasing: I had made some changes that were putting them off from purchasing.
I introduced an additional plan for teams of people, 2x more expensive. However, most customers are solo developers, so they shouldn't have been impacted: I feel like the additional plan could have made them feel like buying a lower product.
β I finally removed the other plan, and sales restarted. However, I will try again in the future since teams of developers take much more support time.
I also introduced a live version of the kit: users can now see a version of the project starter and play with it. Unfortunately, authentication had a bug for some time, so I guess I lost many clients. I will forever thank whoever signed up with youroauthisbroken@checkyourdemo.com π€£
π Organic traffic is the primary channel from which I obtain visitors: thanks to a ton of focus on SEO, Makerkit gained the top of the SERP for many important queries. So I'm now going to focus on adding more sets of keywords.
In total, the website received 780 unique visitors and 2.4k page views. Nearly 2x the previous month, so not bad!
π€ I automated adding purchasers to the private repository using the Gumroad and GitHub API. Automating this was important since many customers thought the process was automatic, but I had to add them manually: for some, that meant waiting nearly 12 hours.
I explained how I built the automation here: https://makerkit.dev/blog/tutorials/sell-code-gumroad-github.
π Ok, what's next? I'm still thinking of adding new stacks. I am not sure which, but lately, I've been investigating a kit for starting Shopify Apps. I have a small working codebase; it will require some changes. But all in all, I am confident I could publish it in a few weeks.
Thanks for reading!

While the domain has been up since January, I only started collecting payments at the end of August.
π₯³ I'm closing September with ten sales totaling $830, which is more than I expected!
β The small community of users has helped a lot with feedback and driving the future of the kit's codebase. I started weekly office hours for support and to discuss all things SaaS/code.
β As for the product, I added many fixes, improvements, and new features, such as:
- Multi-Factor Authentication
- Phone number auth and Email link auth
- Ability to link an account to multiple auth providers
β Had 399 unique visitors and 985 Page views according to Google Analytics. Due to the tech-savvy demographics, it should probably be 20-30% higher in reality. Very happy about this as it's mostly thanks to hard SEO work!
π What's next? I plan to continue improving the demo application, adding more articles for SEO (which is growing!), and improving the documentation. At some point, I'd like to release other tech stacks (Remix, Shopify, etc.).
Ciao! π

Congrats @gc
BTW, your site looks great - not surprising you're having success. Wish I was a React guy - could use this type of template for Vue 3 + AWS ... haha. Nice work, building that type of stuff is never easy.
-
2
Thank you so much! Very appreciated. Agreed, building for developers is never easy π¬
I'm sure there will be a similar product in Vue-land :) (otherwise, good opportunity for someone to take on π€£)
-
After months of beta testing and content writing, I've made Makerkit available for purchase.
While I'd like to add some more features, this is good enough for now, and I will focus on content, SEO, documentation, and dogfooding with another product I'm building.
Once it's refined, I plan on adding more technologies, such as Remix, SvelteKit, Shopify, etc.

Great work! I would definitely use something like this, actually, I was thinking about doing something like this, unfortunately my back-end stack is Python and I don't have much knowledge in Javascript. So I'm afraid that's a blocker to me.
I don't know if that's something you'd want to address: being able to support multiple back-end stacks.
I'm sure there are multiple ways of handling this, but if you'd like a Python support, maybe we can talk !Anyway, awesome job !
-
1
Thank you!
I'd like to support multiple stacks (one in the works already) but always in Javascript-land, as it's what I am good at (Remix, SvelteKit, Solid, etc.) :)
For Python, you could check out SaaSPegasus. It's been an inspiration for Makerkit!
-
-

Very nice, I was actually looking for something like this and you happened to pick the same frontend stack as me.
Whats the price? Its 20 bucks on Github but 100 bucks on the other site.
-
1
Hi, thank you!
With Github, you have two options monthly ($19) or one-off ($99, same as Gumroad)
-
1
Is this more like a framework or a starter template? I'm a backend dev who built something in exactly that stack. I basically just want to see a "real" nextjs app. Folder structure, good practices, rerouting, stripe integration etc.
2nd question is like half as a customer and half as a tip.
Who am I buying this from? Why should I trust that this is good in any way?I don't need omega credentials like "ex facebook 12 year frontend lead dev with 3 books on react", but I would feel better if it just said somewhere on your landing page "build by some guy who did Frontend for 3 years" "Working with react and next for 5 years professionally" or "Check out these apps I (or other people) built with it".
-
1
-
It's more of a starter template, so one would get the entire codebase and edit it as one wishes, not a black box behind a library :) The reasoning is that eventually, one's needs will differ enough, and not being able to edit the "core" code will be a deal-breaker.
-
Thank you for the tip; very appreciated! I'll make sure to add something like that on the landing page! As for the question, I worked as a software engineer for over 10 years (much of which was in the financial sector). Funny enough, most of it wasn't in React but Angular! I did enjoy using React, which led me to build some stuff with it and ultimately culminated with the knowledge necessary to build Makerkit. I do hope that my blog posts and free kits (still only 2) do offer some insight into how the codebase looks like (in fact, the blog posts are literally the codebase broken down in small pieces), plus I offer genuine refund to anyone who doesn't think it's worth it :) This is not how I survive, so the revenue side of things is truly not the primary reason I built it.

Unfortunately, we've already launched our startup recently and are locked into a tech-stack; would've tried it out otherwise.
Best of luck :)
