30k on Twitter. Lost my sponsor.

Friends, enemies!

I bring good news and bad.

I'll start with the good.

The Marketing Examples Twitter account is bouncing. Averaging about 4500 followers each month.

Twitter compounds. My first 5000 on Twitter took 10 months. Now I’ve added that in a month. If you're doing good stuff keep doing it.

Twitter doesn’t pay bills. It’s potential energy.

So, the not so good news. My last sponsor decided to call it a day. Spending was cut as a result of COVID-19. It is what it is.

I’m not down. I’m actually up. Sponsors aren’t the yellow brick road. It’s a good time to focus on monetising myself. A blessing in disguise.

No need for pity - “Sorry to hear...” You can’t go swimming and not get wet. If I'm any good I'll work it out.

Without a sponsor I’ve teamed up with Exploding topics. We're sponsoring each other for a few weeks. So not all bad. Subscriber growth has been doing good as a result.

I'm waiting for you to launch a ($10 per month) membership subscription and I'll be your customer for life. :)

    1. 4

What would you like to see in this subscription? Same question for @petecodes, @dreworos, @graeme - flattered you're keen

I asked specifically about a premium community on this Indie Hackers post. @csallen replied “I call the "kitchen sink" model. It's just relatively messy and unfocused, as you're doing so many different things, and it ends up being tough to identify what the real value is.”

I joined a bunch of premium communities to see just how messy it is. Some are making good money. But awesome takes a lot of work.

The one thing I don't think I could make premium is articles and tips. If I do that growth slows right down ...

I would def buy an ebook - like refactoring ui but for marketing! Or starting simpler, just the twitter threads and blog packaged up with a structure!

I wouldn't join any paid community, sick of em

        1. 1

I'd agree, I'm more likely to buy a book or a one time thing than a recurring subscription.

        2. 1

Cheers Graeme. Thanks for the feedback

          1. 2

haha take with pinch of salt! maybe there are tonnes of marketers who'd love a paid community

      2. 2

I think you could replicate someone like Pat Walls and have extra content for paid subscribers.

Do one article for free and one paid per week. That way you still have growth and you have MRR.

I don't see the problem in you doing case studies for how you've helped other companies by the way! You could get them to pay you to do that and they get more publicity.

        1. 2

          Lifetime Value. A layered joke that Rosie will live 70 more years. 10 * 12 * 70 = $8,400

  2. 5

Losing a sponsor sucks! But it can also be a good opportunity to push yourself out of your comfort zone and start thinking about new ways to monetize ME. I’m sure in a few years you will see this as a turning point!

    1. 2

I agree. Sucks only if I let it suck. 100 bonus subs from Exploding topics yesterday.

If they movin' shaky, we'll just do this shit ourselves, whoa

  3. 2

"If I'm any good I'll work it out." Love your enthusiasm. Its a joy seeing you grow for the last couple of months..

    1. 2

Cheers Towfiq! Very kind words. Appreciated.

  4. 2

Nice growth on your Twitter profile! And nice job on your website Harry! Been visiting it a lot lately. Somehow I'm not finding all the juicy stuff on the website that you're sharing on okdork's FB group and on Twitter. That might be me though? :)

If you factor your Marketing Examples into an ebook you can sell them for $$ on Twitter.

You probably know Gumroad. A lot of people are making things and selling it on Twitter through Gumroad. I would definitely spend some time creating a great ebook. Create a tweet about it and pin the tweet to your Twitter timeline and watch some nice cash coming in. You could probably make a living with that already with 30k followers. (I've seen people with less than 10k followers do it).

    1. 1

Cheers for the support Yannick. So all the quick tips are going into a whole new section called, “7 second marketing tips”.

But you can read them all here

Thanks for the Gum road recommendation. Will dig into it :)

Sorry to hear about the sponsor, but amazing growth on twitter.

I just wanted to let you know that I really enjoy your writing style 👏

You have to have juice in each line. bim bim bim.

      1. 1

That was amazing :D Also, Dutch subs.

        1. 1

          glad you enjoyed it!

  6. 2

You have a great product there Harry, keep hustling! Things tend to sort themselves out when put on the line. You grow or you learn.

  7. 2

    Keep fighting Harry!! 💪🏻

Hey @harrydry good job man. I receive your newsletters and always check (most of the time :) .... Love the quality of the content and even your website was awesome last time I checked.
I saw some comments about monetization where people mention e-books. I second that opinion. I think that should be an easy win for you. I suggest collating your best examples into a 'top 20', Or top 'something' type of thing and putting it up!

  9. 1

Good to hear Harry that you keep doing what you like!

I love the project, I told you many times!

    Love what you do!

  10. 1

With a positive attitude like yours @harrydry, there's no doubt you will not only do well, you will eventually manifest everything you want your business to be. 🙌

    Keep going!

    1. 1

  12. 1

I didn’t even know I’ve been following you for a while but I’ve never seen your tweets surfacing onto my stream. Congrats. Great content. Subscribed.

  13. 1

This sounds like a huge opportunity to monetize Marketing Examples more sustainably.

I'm sure you've thought a lot about this, but here's my recommendation: keep doing what you're doing (writing quality articles and releasing them for free). But also introduce a subscription membership for people who want to get even more out of ME - access to a community, additional articles, etc.

I'm very curious to see how it goes for you and what path you end up taking! Best of luck.

    1. 1

Thanks for the detailed idea Richard! I think something like that might work well actually. Appreciate the support

  14. 1

    Hey man!

Congratulations on the effort and all the growth.

Would you publish content if we write it or do any kind of promos?

    Let us know!

  15. 1

if you're looking to monetize, you can use us - simplefunnel.io

  16. 1

    Wow that's 30.3k now.

Just an idea. Productise yourself. I'm sure you can make a lot of money in a week by setting up Calendly for companies wanting to do marketing for 1000-5000 bucks a pop than you did with Sponsors. Companies have big marketing budgets.

You've also got 2 big proofs: The Kanye West Story & Marketing Examples.

That alone should get you lots of customers & later you can figure out monetization models for Marketing Examples itself.

    1. 1

      Interesting thought Akshay :)

    2. 1

Erm. Isn't that just becoming a consultant? It might be ok short term, but the best businesses have a revenue model which isn't directly correlated to the number of hours put in. Agencies and consultancies are painful!

      1. 1

True. That's why I suggested it as an alternative till he figures out the right business model.

  17. 1

don't stress, you will ace it.

  18. 1

Well in that case, not sorry to hear that!

And wow amazing work there! Great job with the twitter account and congratulations are due too! :)

    David

    1. 1

      Haha! Cheers Chris!

  19. 1

    That's incredible twitter growth!

Have you thought about doing a membership site? I reckon an extra article a week would definitely be worth $10/m for lots of people.

  20. 1

Creativity should be indebted to constraint :)
